Went out today to put in the new ones and came out to a frozen car (was -3C last night and it's parked in a VERY sheltered area). So, decided to put in a new plug in place of the old one I'd taken out the night before (I'd forgotten to put it in the night beforeb& ooops) As you can imagine, it took awhile before it would fire but did eventually. Warm engine = warm hands, I set to work. It IS possible to change all of them without removing the intake manifoldb& it's tricky but possible, you'll need a few extensions (THIN ones) and elbows. 3rd cylinder was the most difficultb& have a few skinned knuckles that will attest to that. All new ones in, I turned the key, pensively waiting for the glow light b& and up she lights! Whoo hoo! Car starts nicely, went for a spinb& then.. it wouldn't shut offb&. Hmmmmb& had to push the level beside the injection pump. Then I remembered people talking about vaccum pipes and leaks etc etc in the MB, and wouldn't you know itb& the pipe on the injection pump had been knocked off while I was ratcheting away on the glow plugs! Many thanks to all the contributors on the list! Once again it's proved invaluable! Nowb& if I could only get the $%^$% ignition barrel out of the dash I'd be sortedb& Anyone recognise my problem from the pics I posted a few weeks ago? Thanks!!!!!! I had problems trying to remove my barrel with a home made tool. So much so I bought a factory one. The only difference in the two was a 15 degree taper at the two ends. If I had read my owners CD carefully there was instructions on how to fabricate it properly. Tips: 1. Ensure your ignition is in the number 1 position. 2. Remove the plastic collar from the front of the barrel 3. Insert tool and gently rock it until it pushes in as far you can get it (took awhile the first time) 4. Grab a hold of the key and the tool and pull out. Note: step three is vague but it is hard to describe the feel when the tool engages the tabs I used a maintenance barrel in both of my replacements, in my humble opinion they are more robust than the original. I have two keys to deal with but this does not bother me. Good luck, Derick - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. You are pointing at the armored collar that remains in place. If you are trying to remove the barrel using the tools pictured your are going to have a rough time of it. The tool usually used is shaped like a set of salad tongs with a tapered ends. A cutup coat hanger was the gauge of wire I used for my home brew puller. The 15 degree taper ends are critical for successful removal in my case anyhow. The tapers longest side should be on the inside of the tong. Notice that when the key is in the correct position, the grooves line up, allowing you to reach the tip of the spring with a tool. The tip has a sort of bend at the end, so that a tapered tool can slide over it (you'll have a difficult time of it with allen keys). Once the tool fully engages the spring, the entire ring is compressed, allowing the lock to be withdrawn. You may also find the photos on my cylinder page helpful: http://www.coolcatcorp.com/Mercedes/Lock190.html The photo at the top of the page is exactly what you see when the cylinder slides out. It was -3 on the mountain yesterday morning. The old 2.5 fired right up. Power was poor until it warmed up, but that's ok. We had a foot of snow in the afternoon and through the night. Fun to watch the SUV's spin. 190D with snow tires is just fine. I managed to extract the cylinder, grind the tumblers and reassemble. Had a bit of a 'heart in mouth' moment when the key wouldn't turn from position 1 when I'd put it back in the car... then gave it a shove and it clicked fully into place... wheeeuuu.... Now that I've done it once... I could probably do the whole job in 20 mins ;-) BTW... car starts beautifully now with the new glow plugs... and I thought I'd fixed the stopping problem... but it's back! Any other ideas (apart from loose vaccum hose on injector pump) as to why it keeps running when switched off? On the ignition switch are there two vaccum pipes, black in colour? They seem to be on ok though. I had to assume the position earlier to have a look under the dash (not a real problem in the MB, you should try it in a Miata ;-) ) Cheers Steve On Sun, 23 Jan 2005 17:04:30 -0500, Mike Frank wrote: > The following photo may be helpful as you try to extract the cylinder: > > http://www.coolcatcorp.com/Mercedes/benz012b.jpg > > The cylinder is retained by the black spring labeled "Lock retainer". > Notice that when the key is in the correct position, the grooves line up, > allowing you to reach the tip of the spring with a tool.
