I think that means 1980 or earlier, this year. Good thing I have no space as otherwise would be really tempted to pursue it. Price a bit high but understand they are also fairly expensive in Europe. I'll either use a divorced transfer case or build a custom adapter to mate the Mercedes transmission to a suitable Jeep xfr case. Tom's got a couple ideas too. We go back about 20 years doing these projects... he helped me with my first monster garage project in '88 or so... the 3.8L Buick V6 in the Chevy Luv, then the '67 Wagoneer... :) He used to be into Volvos... now he's got 20 acres of old Wagoneers... ;) One thought is to use XJ axles and running gear... but the problem with that is the XJ axles are too wide. The XJ axles are 70" wide... while the willys is 57" (see below). http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/dimensions.html (WJvsXJvsSJvsMB) Willys Specifications Wheelbase 104" Length 174" Width 68" (SD) 72" (SW) Height 72" Front Tread 57" Rear Tread 57" Gross Weight 4500 lbs (ex 4x2 SW 4300 lbs.) Year Model 1958 475 4x4 SW 6-226 4x4 SW Anyway... it has a 230 Chevy in it now with a Jeep 3 speed, not sure if it's a T-90 or T-15, transfer case is either a Dana 18 or Dana 20. Need to research this a bit more in my books what it's supposed to have... Tom says it runs good... so I may just keep that driveline and save the 3.0L for a later project... we'll see... Anyway, we'll see how well the chevy engine does in it, and if it works I'll just fix the floorboards and mount new seats and have it painted before bringing it home... I'm thinking either that light blue that is on the new VW beetle convertibles, or that "mellow yellow" they use... the colors they have on the beetles are very retro looking and I think either the yellow or the aqua will look great on the Willys. Every time we see one of those new Beetles we both like the colors... And, my wife always points to these Willys and says how cute they look and that I should get rid of SuperDawg and get one of these... :) Well, what I will do is build a tow bar for the front of the Willys so I can pull it behind SuperDawg. :) (besides at the rate we're going with Superdawg I'll probably have tired of the Willys and sold it to Jim in Wisconsin... ;) Anyway, the Saturday plan, after dragging a couple of loads of gravel home in the J10 trailer behind the Jimmy, is to pluck the 3.0 out of the '77 300CD with my neighbor's backhoe... was going to buy a shop hoist but then remembered the tractor. :) I'll yank the rad, cooling lines, and maybe even most of the wiring... in other words I'm gutting the 300CD... maybe I should invite Mark home so he can play with the Sawzall. ;) I think I'll lower the price on the 300CD from $150 to FREE. ;) The '83 300D is going away next weekend... I'm going to pull the driveshaft tomorrow for the new owner and get it ready to be flat towed down to Portland. That leaves the GMC Jimmy Diesel to find a new home... I also need to fix the left rear disc caliper on the '99 WJ... not sure why it's hanging... suspect that if I bleed that caliper it'll free it up... trying to hold off on major brake upgrades until later in the year, going to get the power slotted rotors... Guess I'll replace the calipers and flush the system at the same time... Yikes, need to fix the water pump on my '91 300d as well... and tighten the belts on my daughter's car and tune it... rats... it's tax time too isn't... oh, double rats, I have to rewrite the midterm for CS470 too... and crawl under the house to get Mark's headers out for his 460 v8 Javelin project... and he wants me to research a turbo setup for his Ford 460... This ought to be interesting... sleep? we don't need no steekin' sleep... (thud, zzzzzzzzz) well, hope y'all have plenty of popcorn... :) if I have time I'll get up and take some pictures of the Willys... I have pictures of the Jimmy stuck in the yard from last weekend... it's just too wide for where I go. :) btw, the new server is working quite well.... spam way down... about 50 spams instead of over 800... much more manageable... I feel so free... :) y'all don't say nothing about the willys to my wife, she's sick right now and don't want her upset... I want to roll in a beautiful looking Willys that she simply won't be able to say no to. :) It's a realizable dream... on a budget... provided the popcorn holds out. ;) have a great weekend folks... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2005 22:02:19 -0800 From: chuck goolsbee Subject: Re: [db] Diesel Benz alert PNW (ebay) At 7:09 PM -0800 1/28/05, derick wrote: > Item number 4522407052 > >Derick A more interesting one is this: Down in Eugene. I got an old Kaiser running for a guy from back east and drove it around a bit... low compression engines and soft springs... sweet rides... that Benz would be pretty cool with those suicide doors. :) and actually Wagoneers ride nice... you'd be surprised... :) Other than some chopiness on really bad stretches of road it had a nicer ride than some 300SDs! YMMV... depends on the tires/springs, yada... some ride like ox carts, others like the luxury rigs they are. :) > -->I'm surprised any of these were imported to the US as I can imagine the > -->demand for a relatively small sedan oil-burner was near zero in the Detroit > -->Big Iron Era. there were folks even then that were prudent... cheap... etc. ;) I remember one of my neighbors back in the '60's had a Mercedes Diesel... old one... we all thought he was a bit odd... ;) > -->Speaking of John, and unix, and whatnot... any good sendmail hackers out > -->there?
