I couldn't put it back in by hand... didn't bother to break out the c-clamp. The passenger side caliper easily pushed in with my fingers when off the vehicle. I put over 100lbs of pressure on the other one and it didn't budge. It really smelled of burnt brakes too. :) I used my mity-vac vacuum brake bleeding attachment... didn't work very well... I broke out an old one man brake bleeder tool that worked much better... so much for another "investment" at harbor freight. In other news... I test drove a couple of cars for fun today... the new mustang, and my friends '86 635CSi. It is not an actual M6, but has some of the M6 stuff... suspension and engine chip... rear deck... not sure what else... I've always wanted a 633/635CSi... but after driving his I realized I'm much happier with my '91 300D. The beemer is sweet though... http://wagoneers.com/tmp/BMW/Feb19-details/ it's a super clean car, but with 187,030 miles I'm not sure what we should try and sell it for, any ideas? Also saw the new Ford Escape Hybrid. Didn't drive it, have driven Escapes before, they're ok. If the hybrid could tow 5,000lbs it might be a serious contender for the Snohomish Monster Garage, er Carport. But for $30K I can do better... funny EPA estimate... 36 city, 31 highway. :) Waiting for the water pump on my '91 300d... got all new BFG Traction T/As yesterday and a 4 wheel alignment today... Have to drive the Jimmy to church tomorrow... sold the extra set of tires for it... at 19mpg and $2.49/gal for Diesel I'd be as well off driving a Full Size Jeep with an AMC 360! :) What's up with these fuel prices??? If I don't sell the Jimmy pretty soon I may give some thought to using waste vegetable oil. :) The '58 Willys is about a week out... maybe two... Superdawg??? haven't talked to curtis in a long time... he's been busy working on his shop and I've just been busy, way too busy... I'm hoping it'll be this year... I am thinking of getting my daughter a Cherokee, if anyone in Seattle or Portland has a nice clean XJ for sale. I'll be selling her '91 Grand Am, it's clean and only has 124,000 miles... runs great... Her car is worth about $2k, not sure if I'll find a nice XJ in that price range, but I've seen quite a few... Kind of miss our XJ. If we could find one that rides nice I think the wife would get rid of her WJ. She prefers the XJ for parking and it's nimbleness in tight spots. The WJ of course is a great road car. I still need to sell the '83 Jimmy with the 6.2L Diesel... the STP treatment did help the transmission quite a bit. Had no trouble hauling gravel and topsoil today in the J10 hydraulic dump trailer... It's just too dang big. I have to hook the trailer up to the front to get it around the carport and into the backyard when dumping gravel. If I try to back it around I end up over the edge... of course it's so wide there's little danger of it rolling. :) later, john ---- - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. One out of a dozen. well, first off you have to understand WHICH computer it is, or which sensor... that's where it pays to have friends who have actually purchased one of those new fangled computer things that you can plug into your car and it'll tell ya. ;) > Then pay enough for a down payment on a new car for the dang thing. well, that's why I haven't fixed the ASD on shadowfax... ;) of course THAT computer was annoying... it would lock the rear end at just the worst time and cause me to slide... I've since found where the solenoid lives and plan on installing a switch to control my rear "locker". Of course I've yet to need that function so it's very low on my priority list... somewhere below cleaning out the crawlspace of the house. ;) > Nope, I'm with Jerry on this one... I to am a computer programmer > and I have always said "Some things just shouldn't have a computer > in them and a car's engine is one of them!" ;) well, I have to agree on that for things like the heater and ac controls. What's wrong with adjusting the temp manually? I've yet to be in any car with an automatic climate control that both my lovely bride and I were comfortable with. Even when we had that WJ with the dual zone thing... The climate control is still one thing I don't like about Shadowfax. >> I hated rebuilding >>wheel cylinders (still have my brake tools for honing drum brake wheel > cylinders >>if anyone wants to make me an offer. ;), hated setting up points, > > adjusting > >>carbs, relining drum brakes, and all the other stuff like that.. > > > > Setting up points, adjusting carbs... That's the essence of being > one with the car! You're gettin' too old my friend! ;)> Jim/> so, you want the brake honing tool? ;) it's yours... speaking about old, being down and so on... it looks like my web server has been off line for a couple of days... I guess you get what you pay for. ;) Can't complain... but still need to downsize that thing a bit, way too much traffic for my gracious host. I still haven't decided whether or not to dump the whole wagoneers.com thing or not... It's a big help to a lot of folks... I get a lot of encouraging emails from folks that have found the info useful. I'm not sure I can make my information small enough to fit on my comcast account, and if it would be found as easily... I am enjoying not being spammed to death the way I was... I'm down to about 40% spam in relation to real mail, but OVERALL total email per day is down to about 80, instead of 800, with spam being over 95% on my last host. BTW, shadowfax is sitting out in the driveway, evicted from his carport awaiting parts (water pump) from Germany... I fixed the brakes on the WJ and will be driving that for a few days... but man, that is one nice looking Benz... I don't usually look at it from the outside... It's got all new tires, new alignment, new rotors, new glow plugs, silverstar lamps, mp3 player... all it needs that I want now is sheepskin covers for the driver's seat and armreat and it's perfect as perfect can be for a 15 year old car with 204,000 miles on it. :) I've been looking at other cars with the increase in Diesel going to $2.49 to $2.55 and considering gas powered vehicles that get 23 to 25 in town... it'd be a wash for economy... but those vehicles can't tow either... and they come with this really obnoxious thing called a car payment... ;) This is the first president's day I've had off in over 23 years! A surprise day off and I'm enjoying all the sunshine and not planning on doing anything... of course my wife just asked me to get another load of gravel for the patio, so I guess I'll go out and play with my Diesel truck and hydraulic trailer for a bit. ;) later, john ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2005 10:19:57 -0800 From: john meister Subject: [db] wagoneers.com It appears that wagoneers.com is off line right now, has been for a day or so... guess it's taking president's day off... first one I've had off in over 23 years as well. :) (if you've tried to email me at john-at-wagoneers.com, well, didn't get it... ;) Still haven't decided what to do with my webserver... wagoneers.com has been me since I started it in '98. Rehosting my server was a good thing, spam dropped off amazingly... mainly because the spam wasn't coming from wagoneers.com but from the virtual-cafe.com that I'd been on for over 10 years... I am enjoying the break from spam... but the performance of the new server isn't as good... I'm killing the guy's bandwidth and just haven't had the time to resize, shrink and reorg wagoneers.com. Y'all have let me know how much good it's done, all encouraging input! I can't think of any complaints I've ever gotten about the site, all positive feedback... that's pretty amazing... of course the site needs organization and is massive... but those aren't complaints, just reality. ;) So, still haven't decided what to do... really it's April 15th that will make my mind up on selling the name... have several good names to chose as an alternative... but hosting it and resizing it still remains an issue. Pulling it down completely isn't a good plan either... I've tested my comcast pages, limited in size and really poor performance... just compare http://home.comcast.net/~unixmeister to any of wagoneers.com when it's on line. ;) Beautiful sunny day in Seattle... not a cloud in the sky... very strange... Should get something done... waiting for a water pump to fix my '91 300D, need to return the brake bleeders to NAPA for the WJ... that was cool, installed the self bleeders... bleed one side, went to the other side, bleed it and then tightened it down, stepped on the brake my wife said that the little rubber cap went flying and brake fluid went all over the place... guess it was the wrong size. :) Other plans today include taking the 6.2L Diesel out with the J10 trailer to haul one more load of 5/8ths minus to finish prepping the area for the patio... then I may put the deep cycle battery and trickle charger in the trailer... then again, maybe not... have papers to grade... ;) And feel like goofing off... ;) Of course I could go and look at XJ's for my daughter... :) later, dieseljohn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2005 13:26:31 -0500 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Re: [db] Honest Competent Mechanics year old car with 204,000 miles on it. :) I've been looking at other > cars with the increase in Diesel going to $2.49 to $2.55 and considering > gas powered vehicles that get 23 to 25 in town... it'd be a wash for > economy... but those vehicles can't tow either... and they come with this > really obnoxious thing called a car payment... ;) Well, it might pay to consider that the spike in fuel prices is *probably* caused in part by the increased demand in home heating oil for the winter months. (Well, the subject really only applies to the diesel list, but it's as good an intro as anything.) New job gave me President's Day off, so I took a trip up to the newer MB of Georgetown (just north of Austin, Texas) dealership. Needed some of those new, short oil filters for my 89 300CE, plus the paperwork for my high mileage grill badge. Aside from drooling over the SLs, they had a funky metallic light green W123 coupe for sale up front. I've been thinking about a nice 83-85 300CD, but this one was a 78 280CE. Looks like they've done a lot of work to it. Has a very good repaint, seats are cushiony, air conditioning works (early ACC system), front suspension and steering feels like the rubber has been replaced. They let me take it out for a drive. Steering feels quicker and lighter than I remember for a W123, but they need to adjust out some slack. Boy, that M110 DOHC is loud. Doesn't seem too much quieter than an OM617 diesel. Pretty good power, except down low. A little shaking at idle; probably needs motor mounts. Tranny shifts rather softly. Sunroof works. Windows are a little slow and sticky. Brakes squeak and the pedal's on the hard side. Cosmetically in very good shape inside and out. Oh, and the driver's seatbelt was very slow to retract. But definitely less of a "driver's car" than my W124 coupe. Made my car feel that much better once I got back in, even if she does have a drinking problem with oil and her AC ain't for squat. They're asking $7,000 for it, and one guy said they'll probably put it on eBay soon if they don't sell it to the guy looking at it for his daughter in high school. If anyone's looking for something like that, this one seems to be in pretty good shape. Nice, strictly mechanical beast with most of the major work done. And I now understand the approach of listening to an M110 like an old industrial Singer sewing machine.
