Looks like it will pull just about every AC compressor clutch ever conceived, including all flavors of R4. One snag is that I'll need to take the nut off the compressor shaft before pulling. The ideal tool for that is an air-operated impact wrench. And I have one. But no air compressor :(. Well, I do have an old Campbell-Hausfeld 2HP, but not enough juice in the garage to run it. It gets up to about 60PSI, and then the breaker blows. Guess I'll get one of those cheapo Chinese compressors from Harbor Fright or Pep Boys, or..... ....And save the Campbell Hausfeld for when I get 220 into the garage. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 10:38:55 -0500 From: "S.D.Byers" Subject: [db] sighting Looks like 2x W123 chassis Mercs on the front page of yesterday's NYT above the fold, that would be Monday 22nd Feb, 2005. Well dear friends and consultants.... It looks like I have finally purchased another car. I found a 1995 300D ... one owner, company car with 110K miles on it. It is RED with a palomino interior and looks good on paper. Am on my way to Little Rock, Arkansas on Thursday. Assuming that it checks out I will hand over the money and will be on my way back to Wisconsin on Friday. So if anyone has any independents (or phone numbers) or good restaurants between Little Rock and Chicago... let me know please. After my last adventure I would feel better at least having a consultant on the way home. Am trying for a quick direct route home, but not if another one is VERY pretty or just great driving... so any suggestions on that side would be welcome also. Thanks for any suggestions ... Hebert" Subject: [db] Coolant Leak - Followup A while ago I posted regarding a coolant leak on my '95 E300D. Well, I managed to track down the leak with some UV dye. Unfortunately, the leak is due to a failed head gasket which dampens my success in locating it a tad. The leak is directly under the exhaust port on the #6 cylinder. I am currently waiting for a quote from my indy on doing the head gasket and timing chain. I will then decide if I want to do it myself or have it done. In the meantime, I'm curious if anyone here has had a similar problem on their 606-equipped vehicle. I created a poll over at Rusty's (http://www.buymbparts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=297) if anyone is interested in sharing their experiences. For what it's worth, my car has about 175,000 miles on it, but I don't know how long the gasket has been leaking. I show no signs of oil/water mixing. Thanks for all the suggestions. J.B. After a quick glance at my trusty map, it looks like you're looking at around a day's worth of driving if you straight shoot it - little rock to madison is about 760 miles, so figure between 11-12 hours not counting sightseeing, fuel/food/bio stops. Taking long stints on the road in a W124 is quite easy as long as you don't drink too much coffee. (sorry, I don't remember where in WI you live...) Probably the straightest shot would be to get to I-40 from Little Rock, then 55 to 57 to 74 to 39/90. If you do go through west memphis, there is a collection (three or four) of truck stops before you cross the river into tennessee. I fueled up there on my trip west from Nashville with the 300D. My 300D has a slightly smaller tank than yours, and doesn't get quite the mileage the 95 should (mine only gets about 32 on the road), so you'll probably need less than two tanks to do the whole trip. 500 miles on a tank in my 300D left plenty to hunt for fuel if the need arose. If 11-12 hours in the saddle is a bit much, might as well split it into two days and do some sightseeing. I don't know anyone in that corridor, much less anyone that could be of assistance. Good luck... Also make sure you know where these filters are located. As most likely you will be driving at night take along a good flash and one of these led head lights in case you have to change a tire. Good luck with your car. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 16:39:54 -0800 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: Re: [db] Honest Competent Mechanics On Mon, Feb 21, 2005 at 11:00:19AM -0800, john meister wrote: > I heard on Paul Harvey this morning that the nation average > for all grades was about $1.98. Upside: I can safely say I am one of the few native californians who has ever swapped out glow plugs on a diesel while it was cold and snowing. (that's an upside?) Downside: it still needed a starter to be swapped in, due to the spark that launched out of it, and all the burnt stuff sitting on it. Good thing I brought the spare. The get me home box for this truck is getting ridiculous. Anyone know of an IDI five speed for sale? :) Oh, and don't worry, if WA needs help running off businesses, they need only look to those transplanted californians.
