I've enjoyed a couple of W123s before my current W124 coupe. I'd prefer to return to a diesel, but that's not a requirement. The 190D/201 is a nice little car, I wouldn't have another one if I could have a 124/300D. I prefer driving my 124, it handles well, rides nicer, is quieter, is more comfortable and is more spirited in traffic. The '87 300D is slightly faster than my '91 300D. bottom line, I'd get another 123/126 before I'd get another 201. A squeeze of the upper hose should be like squeezing a radiator hose hanging from the rack at autozone. If there is any pressure in the cooling system with the engine cold, the head is coming off. If the car is driveable, you can do a similar test by watching the temp gauge and doing a couple of hole shots, then squeezing the hose. This isn't as reliable, however. If you trip over a 3.0L 603 and are interested in it, the first thing to do is to check the casting number on the head. versions below 17 are the flawed casting. The least expensive route to fix this is to get a version 17 or higher head from a junkyard - the 350SDL/350SD head works fine on a 300, and were usually version 17 heads. Once a cracked head is found, price should be negotiated way down. Assuming you can find a #17 head in a junkyard, plan on paying close to a grand for it, then plan on some machine shop labor to inspect it for flatness, cracks, etc - no sense putting a bad head on an engine. Fortunately, the heads aren't heavy, coast to coast shipping for mine (Maryland to SF) was about $30. It is still a good idea to lift with your legs, not with your back. If you were a bit closer, I'd let you compare the upper hose on the 300D to the 190D - it's pretty obvious, even without popping the hood on the 190D. BTW, the new tstat in my 300d is running around 82-84 Deg C. I like the old one better, it stayed right at 80, well, most of the time... this one hasn't crept up like the other one was doing, so I guess it's fine. Like Alec says, there were some revisions when things stopped being called "SD" and became "SDL" in 86. I believe the rear end ratio also dropped, allowing for a slightly better mileage at speed, and the transmission stopped the annoying second gear start nonsense. Sunroof changed to the tilt and slide somewhere around 86. As far as the engines go, the 603 supplied more power, was more efficient, and was quieter than the 617, and did not require valve adjustments. Just watch out for the head.
