I know that the job will be much easier with a pair of bent wrenches. My plan is to buy a couple of cheap Chinese wrenches at the McParts, and modify them with vise, hammer, and torch. Be nice to have the wrenches on hand BEFORE I pull the valve cover off. Anybody know what size they are? - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Jun 2005 10:13:50 -0400 From: Paul Brown Subject: Re: [db] Valve Adjustment Wrenches 14 mm across the flats. The special wrenches are also considerably thinner in cross section than are other spanners. The dimension is (more or less) critical because the clearance between the lock nut and adjusting nut isn't wide enough to get a regular spanner in between. On the other hand, I have heard stories of people getting regular spanners and bending them as you suggest. Jerome Kaidor wrote: > Hi guys, > > I'm planning to adjust the valves on my '85 300D. He put the differential from a '82 240d into my 82 300sd after the a wheel bearing seized and piled up the rear end. This leaves the car with a 3.69 ratio in the rear end instead of the factory 3.07. After much discussion, he sent me a used 3.07 rear end from an unknown car in exchange for the old one back. The problem I have is that on the new 3.07 he sent, when you turn the pinion by hand, there is a stiffness for about 15 degrees of rotation, every rotation of the pinion. I have had the back cover off and closely inspected the gears inside and I can't see any problem with any of the gears nor any evidence of heating. It is no problem to turn the pinion by hand, but the stiffness is very obvious and I don't want to put it in if there is a bearing problem or something. Could this be caused by the diff sitting for a period of time (one or 2 years) sealed up with no oil (like on the shelf at a wrecker)? Thanks for your help, Corey - -- corey church coreychurch-at-fastmail.fm - -- http://www.fastmail.fm - I mean, what is it about a decent email service? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jun 2005 20:05:34 -0500 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] Valve Adjustment Wrenches I did see some offset wrenches at the new Harbor Freight in Austin, but I don't remember if they were any thinner than normal.
