Alec and others, Thanks so much for the helpful info...I'm guessing the next step is to get a repair manual. Whadaya recommend?? By the way, yeah, I'm hooked! This thing is like nothing else. I spent all day looking for reasons to go somewhere. I did about 120 miles of mixed city/highway driving to experience the gamut. Of course, it was 95 degrees which wasn't the best of weather to be out in, but the A/C kept up mostly. At idle it didn't seem to cool much, but who really idles all that much? One question I have is about the oil. The previous owner had it for 5 years and kept the oil changed every 3 months/3000 miles, which, in his case (according to the receipts) worked out to be every 3 months. So, the oil was changed about every 1000 miles the past few years which, i assume, is a good thing. However, it was last changed about 2 weeks / 200 miles ago yet it looks very dark grey in color. Is this normal for diesel oil? Which, by the way, I didn't realize diesel motors even required a different type of oil until Alec's post! One LAST thing (for now ;) )...of all the records (about 93% complete since new!), the one thing I don't see done recently is the differential oil. The manual says 1.1qts of 85W90 / 90w hypoid gear oil. The closest available at my local parts store is Valvoline semi-synthetic 80W90. Will that be acceptable? Sorry to ramble, but I'm "in a zone!" Thanks, Brian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2005 19:37:20 -0700 From: john meister Subject: Re: [db] 300SD...going for it! congrats... recommend synthetic oils, preferably amsoil of course. regular oil changes are essential regardless of the oil. with amsoil synthetic you can more than double your drain interval. don't worry about the dark color, that's the way it is with Diesels. john bree kna wrote: >> Alec and others, >> >> Thanks so much for the helpful info...I'm guessing the >> next step is to get a repair manual. Don't know about the differential, but yeah, engine oil gets very dark almost instantly in diesels. I think it's the soot, a byproduct of diesel combustion, and it's a big part of why diesel oil is different from non-diesel oil. Even the standard US oil ratings recognize this. Those two letter grades (SJ, CH) start with S for spark ignition or C for compression ignition. Particularly as the technology is pushed to optimize economy and emissions, gas and diesel engines put some very different demands on their oil. And it's common for Benz air conditioning to suck at idle. Not all Mobil 1 is actually up to MB specs. Look for their "European Driving Formula" or something like that. It should specifically say on the back of the bottle that it meets MB specs, probably MB 229.3 or 229.5. You can also check out http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html for more that meet the MB specs, although I think many of the ones listed there are Europe-only. So it appears that the injectors are the guilty party. That means if I buy four more I completely solve the problem and will have to spend another $250 or so. If I take it to a shop and have them clean the existing injectors (the four original remaining), then I will probably spend less, but the time it takes to get it there is troublesome... I wonder if I couldn't do something like a Diesel purge on these injectors myself. Anyone know of an on-engine gas injector cleaner??? My daughter arrives on Tuesday... we'll see if she picks either the blue '86 or the white '92... or stick with the red pontiac... ;) Either way, two outta three vehicles are going away... :) And then of course when SuperDawg comes home the Jimmy and quite possibly the '91 300D will go too.
