I wouldn't bother the digest again, but after much deliberation today (and trips to 3 different retailers) I went with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W50 oil for my '84 300SD, mostly because I had always heard that turbocharged cars should run synthetic due to the increased friction and thermal stress. Have I done something bad to my new cruiser? Man, she sure does love the open road...those that think they have me off the line are reintroduced to the finest in '80s German craftsmanship in the form of a gold blur a mile down the road ;) fun stuff man... How much was it? Mobile 1 used to be a synthesized hydrocarbon. It offered excellent lubrication, but not longevity because you were still dealing with the base oil and additives. I believe that somewhere along the way they went true synthetic. I'm sure it's better than Dino oil. And it might be less than Amsoil. If you really care, do an oil analysis and keep track of your mileage. Regular oil and filter changes are the key to a long lived engine, regardless of what you run in it. :) john bree kna wrote: >> I wouldn't bother the digest again, but after much >> deliberation today (and trips to 3 different >> retailers) I went with Mobil 1 Extended Performance >> 15W50 oil for my '84 300SD, mostly because I had >> always heard that turbocharged cars should run >> synthetic due to the increased friction and thermal >> stress. >> >> Have I done something bad to my new cruiser? (NMBC) I did something like that with my Roadster... I put a turbo in... was making 6psi (maybe 7 on a good day with the wastegate rod tightened ;-). Put in a Electronic Boost controller + programmable ECU... now boosting at 10psi with spikes to 12psi (just within my current injectors limits). New injectors on the cards soon (prob 550cc) so I can move the boost to 15psi ;-) That should be good for 270/280bhp ;-) Oh.. and this is a 1.6litre car !! Man, she *** No. I ran Mobil 1 in my 300D for years. Just the last oil change, the stuff got so expensive I decided I really couldn't afford it anymore, and went to Rotella T. WRT to the turbocharger. Here's a fact about diesels: diesel exhaust is not as hot as gasoline exhaust. Not nearly as hot. For that reason, turbo distress is not much of an issue. I've been told that a turbo will last about 900K miles. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 08:26:39 -0500 From: acordova-at-texas.net Subject: Re: [db] diesel motor oil question... Like John said, you should only really panic if the oil is not C rated. I believe the 15W-50 is the only Mobil 1 available at mass merchants that in fact does meet MB specs. You don't have to use synthetics just because it's a turbo. Just be sure you don't pull into your driveway at 4000 RPM and immediately shut down. Be gentle for your last half mile or so, and let it idle for ten or twenty seconds before shutdown if you've had your foot in it. Lets the oil circulate through the turbo's bearings to get rid of some of the heat. I found myself using the before and after time regularly. Turn the key, then buckle up while the glow plugs do their thing, and unbuckle and gather my stuff while giving it a few seconds before shutting down. Hebert" Subject: Re: [db] the '92 sport injectors The only "over the shelf" injector cleaner I've ever found that works well in gas applications is Techron. I usually run the tank near empty, add a bottle of Techron and then 5 gallons of fuel. I run it almost empty again and then do a normal fillup. By adding it to a few gallons of fuel it stays in a higher concentration. On my fuel injected gas vehicles, I usually do a treatment every time I change the oil. It makes a notable difference in power, smoothness, and economy. J.B. Well, a stock powerchoke has that built in - EGTs are monitored by the ECU, and fuel is removed if it gets too hot. Unsurprisingly, this is often disabled by chips, but I don't know if that is a function of the multiplier in the chip, the chip knowingly doing that, or the ECU disabling it as a function of being chipped. About the key...you're in Nashville, right? (I think I saw that on one of the earlier posts...) First, try West End Lock & Key Co., on 17th Ave. N. (just north of Church St.). They have key blanks for just about everything (might depend on whether your key is actually just a key, or is one of the newer keys with a chip...I'm guessing that for an '84, probably still just a key). My 300D key was so worn that the key shop couldn't make a duplicate, so I called the dealer. For $22 (they'll take a credit card over the phone) and two days' wait, they made me a key. You just need the VIN, and proof of ownership when you pick it up. (If you're not in Nashville, ignore the advice about West End Lock, but the dealership advice still applies--an '84 key should be no problem, given $ and the VIN.) ________________________________ From: owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net on behalf of bree kna Sent: Mon 6/27/2005 9:10 PM To: diesel-benz-digest-at-digest.net Subject: [db] best source for service manual and spare key? for my newly-acquired '84 300SD / W126 what is the best service manual to get and from where? i've seen the CD-based factory manuals on ebay, but recall bad reviews? a letter accompanying the packet of literature that came with the car said a spare key could only be had direct from the factory, but that was over 20 years ago...now? oh yeah, first check today after 187 miles of driving. 27.7mpg with 1/3 city, 2/3 highway driving...and i couldn't be happier!
