The tenant has an silver 85-ish Mercedes 300SE that's been sitting motionless in the parking for several months. The tenant claimed that he had lost the key.... I told him to go to the Mercedes dealer with his VIN #, and they could code-cut him a new key. If the tenant vacates and doesn't come back for his car, is there any legal way I can get it? You can have a tow company come get it and deal with it, or you can wait 30 days and file a storage lein against the car. If the legal owner makes no move to get the car or satisfy the storage lein, you basically get to sell the car to recoup your 'costs'. Nothing saying you can't sell it to yourself if you want it. CA Civil code sections 3072 (value less than $4000) and 3068.1 (over $4000) have the legalese, or go poking around the dmv website or call the dmv for more information. A complication is that we are not quite separating on friendly terms. They ran out of money and could not pay the power company. They tried various ploys to fool PG&E into giving them service - "I just moved into this apartment, here's my fake rental agreement". When they figured out that they could not get power, they arranged to fail their section 8 inspection ( as our fault ) - we had fixed a few things in their apartment, and they "unfixed" them to fail section 8. Then they gave us a 30-day notice about how they were incensed about us not fixing stuff and they were moving out :). The handling was terrible, even dangerous. That car got a special mention in "Unsafe at any Speed". The transmission was between the rear wheels, the engine up front. It had a small-diameter driveshaft in a torque tube, turning at engine speed. When you engine-breaked, the driveshaft would "snatch", banging on the clutch ( which was in front, bolted to the engine flywheel ). After a couple thousand miles of that abuse, the clutch hub would tear loose. I got to where I could change the clutch disk in about 20 minutes. Great engine though. I read once that GM had a small aluminum V8 that was quite a nice little rig, but too expensive for GM's mass market cost structures. They licensed it to Rover, and a derivative of that was still underpowering Range Rovers until about the time BMW bought them. This was something I was planning to get more space, offer accounts/webspace etc, it was expedited is all. :) I'll have it built tonight and either run it down to the digital forest tonight or in the morning... :) Provided of course the motherboard will be happy with only one memory chip.. blah, blah... while at the pc store some guy came up and offered to buy shadowfax... for more than book value... he crawled all over the car, listened to it... he said he'll be in touch... so unless he's just a lunatic on the loose I'll hear from him again... already let bruce know so he has a shot at shadowfax. Need to get SuperDawg done... optimistic that the driveline will be in by the time I get back from Tokyo, then curtis plans to get the body parts painted while the weather is good. Meanwhile, the Jimmy should get home this week, and not too soon... my barrels runneth over... gave away 10 gallons of filtered veggie oil last night and a few more to chuck on monday... put 5 gallons in shadowfax... bringing home another 20 gallons on Monday too... yikes... and my new replacement Northern Hydraulics 12v transfer pump blew it's fuse 3 gallons into the first batch, resorted to manual... rats. I need to get the A/C fixed in the little blue '86 XJ too, might be driving that if the Jimmy doesn't get here soon... ;) well, off to assemble a pc and load SuSE... Originally when the system was setup there were some DNS issues. But those shouldn't be impacted by the server swap, used the same name, same IP. anyone familar with postfix on Linux? I could use a little help off list...
