Although I can't say anything about the quality (I haven't used mine yet), Harbor Freight sells torque wrenches ridculously cheap. 20 or 30 bucks-ish. Lots of other really cheap tools there, too. And boxes of cheap latex gloves to keep your hands pretty. ;-) I don't know if my 89 300CE gasser uses the same transmission setup as your older diesel, but I just had a tranny leak repaired. It was the "governor pump", which I think is the rear pump. MB automatics use two hydraulic pumps, where contemporary domestics usually only used a front one. My mechanic had to chisel out some allen bolts, but they didn't have to drop the transmission. A few replacement rubber bits seems to have done the trick. I still don't know exactly where the cover that he messed with lives, but I think it was related to where the shifter rod enters the tranny. Since German rubber often seems to have a lifespan in the neighborhood of 20 years, you may just need to become familiar with the leak routine: Clean the engine and tranny thoroughly, then look for the leak after the first hours of driving. After that, no matter where the leak is hiding, all the fluids go to the back and the bottom, often making it tricky to identify the true source. And Dexron III is right.
