I have a 1980 300 SD that I bought off of ebay. Car came with a bumper hitch. I looked at it as 'That was wishful thinking'. Turns out that it pulls pretty well. I bought a 1985 500 SEC off ebay. Loaded the car dolly onto the 300 SD and drove the 225 miles to Austin. Loaded the car up, disconnected the driveshaft(on the 500 SEC) and brought the car back. Did just fine - I was amazed. Pulled better at 65-70 than at 50-55, less swaying. Waylon Black Little Elm, Texas Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 17:01:12 -0700 (PDT) From: bree kna Subject: [db] trailer hitch on SD300? new seats? I've been wanting a truck for all of these projects about the house, but am now leaning toward multi-purposing the '84 300SD a la trailer. I crawled underneath the tail of the car and don't immediately notice a good place for mounting a hitch. Heck, I don't even know that much about the different classes of hitch. I'd imagine the heaviest load I'd ever tow would be 1000-1500lbs of mulch with the majority being your typical Home Depot / Lowe's runs. ideas? Also, constantly fielding, "These seats suck!" comments from the S.O. leads me to believe that the keep-the-diesel-forget-a-truck plan would have more credence with better seats. again, ideas? I must say, I'm happy to forget about getting a truck and continuing down this road of once a month projects because she's a old car. I do like to tinker! I have a '96 4.0L with 2 cylinders that are "low", possible bad head gasket, needs new water pump, etc. I'm thinking of dropping the '96 into my '92 with the '92 plumbing and seeing if it's ok, if it needs a head gasket doing that in the XJ isn't too bad..., if it needs bearings, I can probably do that in the Jeep as well... http://wagoneers.com/XJ/rigs/1992XJ/ALL.html Of course if I can pull the bearings in the Jeep, that would lead me to believe that I could extract #6 and push it out the top... hmmmm..... thoughts? Hopefully my buddy will buy the '92 complete, I'll give him the '96 stuff with it and it'll all go away and I can start working on my dual veggie oil and propane injection systems for my Diesels. :) Speaking of which, thoughts on propane injection as a "boost" for my 6.2L Diesels? We'll be looking at the instructor's mobile biodiesel homebrewing system (identical to what you'd use to make biodiesel in your backyard), and will make a small batch in that system. Most of the class focuses on the chemistry behind biodiesel homebrewing and quality control, and we'll be doing a lot of 'lab' work making test batches and variations on different formulas. The feel of the class is a bit like the mad scientist version of "high school chem lab" (hopefully without the spitballs and giggling)- you'll be doing hands-on lab exercises in small groups the entire time, which will teach you how to make and troubleshoot your home batches- and we'll be learning the chemistry basics that underlie making good quality fuel for your vehicle. This is a fast-paced class, and I strongly recommend that you read this website first: http://biodieselcommunity.org Most of the class will be indoors but we will occasionally step outside to the processor trailer. We will have safety equipment for you for the labwork. Includes a complete '96 4.0L engine with accessories, flexplate, AW4 transmission, all computers and wiring harness. Includes a custom machined adapter to mate the AW4 to an NP219, NP228, NP229 or NP208. The AW4 typically mates to an NP231 or NP242. Both of those xfr cases uses slip yoke couplers and aren't as sturdy. Using the stock xfr case allows someone to use the existing driveshafts in a Grand Wagoneer or J10. I had the adapter made custom to install this into my '83 J10. The 4.0L in a Full Size Jeep will provide increased fuel economy and reliability over either the 4.2L or 5.9L carb'd AMC engines. And keep it all Jeep at the same time. To install you'll need motor mounts for a 4.2L. This 4.0L has just over 100,000 miles and was overheated. Two of the cylinders read "low", but within the acceptable range. The engine was pulled and replaced with another known engine rather than spend money on labor and repairs. The engine might work as is, but it would make sense to tear it down, check the bearings and cylinders/rings and have the head cleaned up. Will break up the kit if desired. Will sell the adapter separately for what it cost me... about $350. Will sell the AW4 for $250 (with torque converter). Will sell the engine separately for $300 (going core value). Will sell the computers, wiring harness and accessories for $300. Recommend buying the "kit", makes a great happy meal for your Jeep project. The engine, accessories, engine computers/wiring harness is in Snohomish. The AW4, adapater, and the other half of the wiring harness is in Centralia. Delivery possible for fuel costs. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 10:42:51 -0400 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Re: [db] biodiesel class So, you gonna take the class?!?! ;) girlMark also hangs out on www.thedieselstop.com.
