I've been driving my '91 300d a lot of miles, commuting 28 miles one way every day... (30mpg) and have been so busy I kind of spaced the concept of an oil change... so 13 months into the current usuage I drained and replaced... had 17,482 miles on the amsoil synthethic 0w30 series 3000 Diesel oil... I've been kind of dreading the oil analysis report figuring I'd get chewed out by the lab. (They've actually called me and told me to change my oil immediately once when I had an injector fail and didn't know about it!) Anyway, I open up the report, and it's almost all A's all the way across, only two B's. And this without even doing the recommended filter change at 6 months. The suggested range for the synthetic Diesel oil is about 15,000 miles, and then using analysis after that. I usually never go this far, sometimes about 2x the recommended factory interval. (the factory interval on dino oil is a guarantee of a rebuild) I'm running the 15w40 Marine Grade Synthetic Diesel oil now, but will switch back to the series 3000 0w30 in about 10,000 miles. The main reason for going to the slightly more expensive Synthethic is the fuel ecomony... I was getting over 30mpg and almost 31 most of the time... now it's dropped to right at 30mpg or just a smidgen below. One thing that did show up on the analysis was a slight indication of potassium... I'm thinking that running veggie oil might have had something to do with that, hard to say... need to do more research. Not having to change the oil but once a year is a nice option, and it's really comforting to know that the oil analysis supports it. I may scan the report in and put it on my website. FWIW, the oil analysis costs about $10, or it might have gone up to $15 recently, not sure. But the reports can tell you a lot about your engine no matter what kind of oil you're running. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 19:22:14 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] oh the temptation... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7542426114 john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Sep 2005 19:34:19 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] Re: xj: Re: report card in! - oil analysis back... Bad ones will normally be MUCH higher. So if you use a 1K setting, all the plugs will show a dead short.
