UPDATE: he bought a battery and made it to Minneapolis, he's a block from the Benz dealership... he just called at 8pm seattle time. :) He's got one bad injector, hope that's all it is. :) I'll ask him tomorrow what Diesel prices have been. He's hoping to drive through Glacier Nat'l park on the way home... hope he can beat the snow. john On Fri, 30 Sep 2005, john wrote: >-->one of our list members is somewhere south of Madison with >-->a "new" to him 124 series 300d that is dead... >--> >-->last report he was 40 miles south of Madison in Edgerton. >-->I talked to the mechanic (a non-Benz/GM type) >-->and assured him that the alternator was quite normal. Call Metric Motors http://www.mercedesengines.net/ or 800-622-6867 and they can probably tell you what it is likely to be AND how hard they are to rebuild AND how much for them to do it....... Great people, by the way....I was going to send them my junked up piston and rod and they were willing to find me a piston (possibly even good used) with new rings for around 100 bucks (or less if they could find me a good used one) and even put the rod on the replacement. Pity that the cylinder wall is cavitated.......
