Folks: I am getting consistent high 20's (25-29) in my 1982 300 CD. I believe that the 2.5l turbo is the oil motor with the best MB economy. 1) is this true? 2) in what year what vehicles did it come or with what should I replace my 82? An MB, VW? I drive about 60 miles a day and need good AC as well as economy. - --Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Oct 2005 19:31:42 -0400 From: Michael Frank Subject: Re: [db] Year of MB diesels for best milage? My '79 300CD (normally aspirated) would regularly give 26mpg. My '87 190D has the 2.5 turbo. With a light foot, it gets 33 mpg city, up to 39 mpg on the highway. The 190D was one year only in the US, but I think the 2.5 was available with 300D's into the 90's. On the subject of AC, the 190 has been converted to 134a, and has a much better climate control system than the older car. The engine does tend to run hot in city traffic, and I'm wondering if the problem is fixable. You can read all about that in my blog: wow, your Jag only made it that far? I drove a J10 up from the bay area and went through two alternators... blew the first one in Shasta, drove to Medford on battery... replaced alternator and battery in Medford then blew the 2nd alternator just crossing into Vancouver... drove the rest of the way home on battery... engine never died, and it was at night... I ran with parking lights or no lights as much as I could... so what month will your jag be? hope they don't put someone in front of it like they did in the 05 calendar... the FSJ calendar we put together a few years ago didn't have people in it... just classic Full Size Jeeps... :) I had two photos in it. My J10 and then another shot with three local J10s. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Oct 2005 08:41:49 -0400 From: Edward Pomeroy Subject: Re: [db] Year of MB diesels for best milage? Hi Eric - that is not bad, but my '93 300 with the 5 cyl TD consistently gives 30 to 32 MPG depending on weather conditions. I commute about 75 miles per day on mixed Highway/Local roads. When I see it drop to 28 I know it is time to put another dose of injector cleaner in the tank, that usually "fixes" the sticking injector (the loud hammering clatta-ting is indicative of a my #3 injector sticking again). I would not replace the MB unless you can find a really clean TDI VW and were willing to put up with the smaller car :-) I think most listers will agree that the 5 cyl T diesel is the best Benz powerplant of the lot. Hey, what would be the best Mercedes Diesel to drop into a Jeep Cherokee (XJ)? they weigh about 3,400 to 3,800lbs. I know that you'd have to use one from '87 and up or they won't fit... john On Sun, 9 Oct 2005, Edward Pomeroy wrote: > -->Hi Eric - that is not bad, but my '93 300 with the 5 cyl TD consistently > -->gives 30 to 32 MPG depending on weather conditions.
