I figured out how to mount my wipers with the euro lights. the bracket on the bottom of the euro lights is further to the outside and more forward... of course I can't break it off and reattach it, but I can take another l-bracket, jb weld it in place, use tie wraps, and maybe, maybe, use some small sheet metal screws to attach it... we'll see... the plastic is very brittle and drilling into the housing could be a problem... taking pictures... also, going to hook up the euro parking lights... I may run a separate wire and switch... going to splice into the stock parking light wiring initally. Picked up a bullet connector. grabbed my IPF lights out of my spare H4 lamps for a Jeep... noticed that that I have a set of the same Osram H4's that came in the euro version lamps... whoever provided these light assemblies removed every piece of hardware and all the bulbs, save one... oh well, works for me... :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Oct 2005 22:28:21 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] euro headlights, a rethink on the wipers... looking at the wiper mounting arrangement, angles and clearance issues... I'm not sure I really want to think this hard... I mean if I lived in snow country these wipers would be awesome... but I don't... and if it snows I'll be driving a Jeep or other 4x4 more than likely... I have run into the wiring issue... metered everything out and need to either fabricate a custom connector or try to find the connectors... my friend in NL didn't get the connectors or any of the bulbs... not a big deal... got the pair with shipping for only about $180. Performance Products lists the 124 euro set for $497.84. Too bad they don't offer the connector kit... or maybe they do... but I don't want to wait. ;) Anyway I can get some male bullet type connectors and insert them into the stock socket and some female bullets and attach them to the euro housing... the only wire I'll have to tap/splice is the parking light for the euro parking lamp. :) very cool. It seems to me that if I could get a six plug connector I could move the wires around a bit... I wonder if any parts store would have one... only problem with that would be converting it back... I'll make the connectors and then seal 'em with Goop so they are fixed in place. If I ever put the stock lights back I can just pull the jumper and go back to stock. DETAILS: ================================================== the US connector to the headlight assy is: 1 - fog light (gray with green stripe) 2 - Ground (brown) 3 - high Headlight bulb (yellow with blue stripe) 4 - low Headlight bulb (white) ================================================== x = plastic guide pin US 3 4 1 x 2 ================================================== the Euro housing: 55 - black wire - fog light 56a - white - low H4 bulb 31 - brown wire - ground (common) 56b - yellow wire - high H4 bulb 58 - grey wire - parking lamp in headlight ================================================== x = plastic guide pin EURO 55 56b 56a 58 31 x ================================================== can't mate the US connector to the euro assembly... so, will have to make a custom jumper setup that mates: US Euro 1 55 (fog) 2 31 (ground) 3 56b (high beam) 4 56a (low beam) splice pk 58 (park bulb) ================================================== I'm sure I could mount the wipers to the units... the motor base needs to sit about 8" from the edge of the lamp housing and sit back 2.5". The Euro base is over about 9.5" and sits back only 1.5". I could bolt a bracket to the euro mount and offset the wiper... that way I'll use the metal opening on the front panel... if I use a section of plumbers tape I could easily adjust the motor angle once it's in... hmmmm... let's see what daylight brings... BTW, using IPF magic green bulbs that I had in one of my XJ's, can hardly wait to "see the light". :) I have a solution for the front valance if I don't use the wiper, have done it on a few other cars that had rock chips on the front... I'll just put a strip of white reflective tape across the front piece under the entire headlight... sure, it'll look a bit like a volvo, but hey, it'll work... OH, ONE QUESTION... what should I do with the squirter line if I don't use the wiper??? hmmm. maybe I should aim it at the headlight, eh? :) One other thing... found a cooler in front of the driver's side opening, looks like the engine oil cooler... y'all be careful about curbs with your 124... you smack one and you could wipe out your oil cooler. ;) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Oct 2005 22:29:41 -0700 From: Charles Redell Subject: [db] type of oil Hey folks, what grade oil should I buy for my 300 d turbo when I do the change on it? thanks! c - -- Proud owner of an 84 300d turbo running B100 (if you don't know what this means, just ask!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Oct 2005 00:31:54 -0500 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] euro headlights, a rethink on the wipers... Whetever other debates there may be about synthetics, most seem to agree it will improve cold starting when it's well below freezing. If you want to just go with conventional oil, Chevron DELO 400 15W-40 is a very good choice, is readily available, and does happen to be approved by Mercedes (meets their 228.x specs). C is compression rated. I'm running delo 400 in my 6.2L Jimmy Diesel and getting crappy mileage, but probably won't switch it to synthetic because it's just a temporary driver until my J10 is done. The 6.2L in my J10 will get amsoil of course. Avoid 10w40 oil in any Diesel. I'd also avoid any of the penn state oils because of the problems I've had with them... pennzoil, valvoline and quaker state... I've had ok luck with texaco, shell, mobil one, Kendell and years ago quaker state... the important thing about oil is understanding the additive package and keeping it changed. I would highly recommend using any synthetic because you have a turbo... keeps the bearings and seals from getting coked up... higher temp capability... john >-->thanks! >-->c >-->Proud owner of an 84 300d turbo running B100 >-->(if you don't know what this means, just ask!) ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Oct 2005 23:03:42 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: RE: [db] euro headlights, a rethink on the wipers...
