Must be gorgeous. There are many different alloys and types of "aircraft grade aluminum". The most common type is 2024T3, which is aluminum alloyed with copper. It is heat treatable, but not readily weldable. It is "solution heat treated" and then cold worked ( the "T3" part ). Sheet stock is commonly supplied electroplated with a thin coat of pure aluminum for corrosion resistance, AKA "Alclad". - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Nov 2005 21:32:27 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] the ultimate trailer? I'm thinking about using pins to make it adjustable, but welding the structure on the sides... have made stuff like this before, but not to bear weight... always used steel, but that makes for a heavy trailer. Made a single axle car trailer before that I used to haul my tractor, small trucks and cars, but it was marginal and only useful for short trips. I'm thinking the ultimate utility trailer... light, adjustable in size, easy to pull... got some ideas, need to pencil them out and see if they are feasible. john On Sun, 20 Nov 2005, Jerry Kaidor wrote: >-->> Yep, the original HUMVEE/HUMMER chassis below the beltline is all >-->> aircraft grade aluminum and it is treated with a process that leaves it >-->> gold in color, I forget the name, >--> >-->*** Probably anodized. You fellows are way beyond me on metallurgy. I know a bit about steel and cast iron since I worked in that industry for a few years. Aluminum is a mystery :-) I will ask about and see what the engineers say. And yes, IMHO the raw unpainted HUMMER or HUMVEE does look prettier than after paint. Trouble is that we also use CYBOND on all the joined metal panels, so the paint actually hides the ooze from the joints. After curing, the bond is tougher than the aluminum alone. Amazing stuff. Just put the Benz into the barn. We are supposed to get our first real lake effect snow storm tonight. Temps about 30 and 6 to 8 inches forecast in bands. Hit or miss if we are in one of the bands as this depends on wind direction. I am about 1 mile inland on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Will be driving the Van in the salt, not the Benz ;-) . Greetings to all listers - enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. We truly do have a lot to be thankful for, not the least of which is our men and women in uniform and their families. I'm sure the list will be active over the holiday. ;) lake effect? 30 degrees? 6 to 8 inches of what? ;) it's foggy and 40 here... :) salt? How quickly you forget. I'll refresh your memory... It looks like this: http://my.execpc.com/E1/FC/jslash/F350/Plowing1.JPG ;) I can't speek for Edward but *I* love it! I plan to stay here for the rest of my days in this lifetime. Isn't it great we all like something different? Otherwise it would be WAY over populated! ;) Jim ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2023 **********************************
