(they didn't seem to exclude the Diesel model this time... hmmmm..... ;) problem is the new grand cherokee doesn't even have a real jeep designator... looks more like a pacifica or dodge than a jeep... the commander, while certainly a nice rig, also doesn't have a jeep designator, has absolutely horrific visibility, reminds me of a hummer from the inside, and the glorious old xj from the outside... so that leaves the tj and the kj. the kj has horrible seats, looks butt ugly, is too heavy, inefficient use of space, mercedes like seats (did I say they were horrible?) and controls in the center console, one thing I don't care for in my mercedes, very awkward and interferes with the placement of my latte, cell phone and so on... ;) HOWEVER, the kj has a DIESEL engine... a GOOD DIESEL engine... of course the expected fuel economy isn't very exciting, but it is a Diesel engine... the tj is still a real jeep... solid axles and all that... would be nice if it still had leaf springs, but that's ok... ;) If they put the Diesel in the TJ they might be able to tempt me... What would be really nice is if they had made the WJ available with the Diesel here in the states... I loved my '85 XJ with that horrid little 2.1L French Renault disaster, and would have kept it had it an automatic... the xj seats were pretty bad and really did a number on my lumbar... That engine didn't have enough oomph to tow it's own shadow, so an AT would have been really sluggish... the main issue with that engine was typical french bleeding edge technology with no safety margin designed in... horrifically expensive unobtanium type parts too... just the sleeve kit on that engine 15 years ago cost more than most complete engine rebuilds today!!! Anyway... with 2005's still left, GM laying people off and gas prices high I bet a deal could be made on a TJ... but then again when I think about the total cost and the idea of possibly actually retiring in this lifetime... I don't think it's going to happen... besides, if I have to have a 4.0L as an engine I might as well have it in a nice XJ or WJ... :) Never had a new car... and if Jeep keeps screwing up their line, probably never will... ;) of course there is the Toureg... but then there is the little issue of "new" costs... but that's ok, I can wait 3 or 4 years, I've learned that what I want in a new car is often what others, typically those who care about their cars, usually buy, and then get rid of in 70,000 miles or a few years and I can pick up for a fraction of the new cost... Done that will a number of nice Jeeps and a few Mercedes as well. So, someone out there right now is paying the depreciation on my "new" vehicle... :) thank you. I wonder what it's going to be next... http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 11:25:31 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] Re: [WJ-Grand] Portland, Oregon On Fri, 25 Nov 2005, mrinsure40269 wrote: >-->Is there anyone on this list from the Portland, Oregon list who is >-->mechanical? I know there are a few folks down there... not sure how much they'd be able to help, but they may know of a shop down there that would be more affordable. Portland is a big area... if you could narrow the area down a bit it might help as well. A '95 ZJ should be easy to get used parts for, but even then $300 isn't that much in the grand scheme of things... Portland was known as a major car theft area a few years back, liberal judges turned car thieves back out on the street with just a slap on the wrist... :( john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2025 **********************************
