I didn't think there WAS such a thing!! ;) I love my F-350! :) Jim ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Dec 2005 16:18:22 -0800 From: Charles Redell Subject: Re: [db] starting problems An Update on the situation... because I think you guys love my hijinx... I followed John's reccomendation today and decided to head up I5 to Interstate battery (it was the first day I could find the time to run up there.) I borrowed by friend Dayna's car (you might remember the 81 diesel rabbit pickup I asked about a few months back. It's that car. Back from the shop with a new fuel pump it was running again and she was quite happy about it). Well, as I got on I5, the thing started to stutter and miss. Odd, thought I, this shouldn't be happening. With the lack of power and doing 45 in the right lane I called Dayna and she said that "oh yeah, that happens, I just shift to another gear before it seems like it needs to and it stops happening." uh-huh. I shifted, had the expected no power and eventually the stuttering started again until finally the car died mid lane. always fun. I got her over to the side and let it sit while swearing for a moment and tried again. The rabbit re-started, sputtered and then died out again. Nothing but nothing would get her going again. Just a lot of cranking and no catching (sound familiar yet?). After a bit, it did start, but I was flooring it in neutral and even then it would die again. Well, I got a tow truck to take me to Chris Goodwin's (who had replaced the fuel pump) and gave up on getting a new battery. When I got to Chris' it turned out he was there working on a project and I went into give him the keys. He asked what had happened and I expalined it and he asked (smartly) "is she running Biodiesel?" "80-20," I replied. "Probably a clogged fuel filter. I've had about 9 of those in here this week. I'm just running pure diesel in mine." *ding* a light went off in my head.... I neglected to tell you all that the reason I was trying to start my 300 D the other day was to go and get dino diesel to blend with the biod in the tank to obviate this exact issue.... Well, I bought a fuel filter from Chris ($9) and went to try and switch the rabbit's out. I couldn't get the thing off though and finally just gave up with numb hands and my ride showing up to take me to my car with my battery (which was in the back of her truck). She'll have to fix that on her own this time (or get me new gloves at least!). And I got back to my monster, reattached the battery and then looked at my fuel filter (thank god that inline one is see-through) and what do you know? Instead of the usual liquid bubbling in there, I see pure, golden honey. Seriously, the fuel in that line is the same consistency (and color) of honey, except thicker. That car is going nowhere fast. With luck the weather will turn in a few days and I can switch out the fuel filter and take for a good long drive to use up the biod and replace it with dinod.... meanwhile, I'll be researching ways to keep my fuel warm over the winter (any ideas) and taking the bus. Ahhhh, the adventures of a non-mechanincal enviro. Hope you're laughing as hard as I am! c ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Dec 2005 18:10:49 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] starting problems don't feel bad... I filled the tank on my Jimmy with so much veggie oil that it wouldn't start... and when I did get it started the mileage dropped about 4 mpg... :) too much of a good thing is not good. ;) put the veggie oil on hold waiting for my biochemist friends to process it into biodiesel, at least to use up what we have... will probably blend that with dino diesel... filters are important... my j10 will have multiple filters, with bypasses... :) john On Sat, 3 Dec 2005, Charles Redell wrote: >-->An Update on the situation... because I think you guys love my hijinx... >--> >-->I followed John's reccomendation today and decided to head up I5 to >-->Interstate battery (it was the first day I could find the time to run up >-->there.)
