Well, I had to make my case to Washington's Dept of Revenue that my '93 300D wasn't worth the $12,300 they claimed it was worth (and wanted to tax me on). I typically saw them going for $7-10k on eBay in early Fall. (I do have to mention that the DOL folks were very nice about it and accepted my KBB printout without question, though, so I ended up only taxed on my purchase price of $6,350, instead.) > thankfully I don't need 30mpg in town any more... 10 mile commute is > affordable with just about any kind of mileage... ;) so happy to be > back at that large local aerospace company. Hebert" Subject: Re: [db] Advice on another M-B Diesel I'm sure others will chime in, but I'll give you my not-so-humble opinion. From an MB diesel standpoint, the 124 chassis cars are the pinacle of design, reliability, style, and comfort. They combine the tank-like characteristics of the 123 chassis with more refined suspension and more soundproofing. They have a few additional "toys", but still remain easy and relatively cheap to work on. The 210 chassis cars (E class, '96 and later) are no where near the same caliber of car. Inferior metal treatment, too many toys to break, large repair costs, etc. are the reasons I would avoid them. Factor in the multiple front spring perch failures that I have heard (they only used 3 spotwelds to attach the perch to the car), and that just seals the deal. You can look for a nice '87 300D Turbo in either sedan or wagon versions. For even more refinement, look for a '90 to '93 300D 2.5 Turbo like John has. Finally, the '95 E300D gives you the updated body with factory Euro headlights and the normally aspirated OM606 motor that was used until the latest CDI motor was released (at least until 2001, I believe). Any of these cars will be top-notch rides. Good luck! J.B. Had a look at the bill... 60euro each (had both of the rears done) for the bearing kits and 120 labour(! for 4->5 hours work!!!) + VAT. Was reading the bearing removal and refitting guide in the Haynes Manual.. considering its an interferance fit & so requires a press + tubular widgets to get it out + involved the dreaded hub nuts, I'm REALLY glad I didn't go at it in the rain on the driveway! So Saturday I popped round to my local scrapyard and found he had a 190D in, '91 model I think. I found a few bits I was after plus an old school AM radio for the Beetle (to complete the "look" heheh). Back at home, I fitted the gas strut for the bonnet I picked up in the scrapyard + fixed the washer nozzles, one of the feed lines had popped off, herself was very impressed with her clean windows. ;-) I also picked up the glass from the wing mirror on the car in the scrapyard. Slight difference in the placment of a bump on the back of it means that it won't "click into place"... until I get the dremel at it tomorrow heheh ;-) Steve On 11/30/05, Stephen Rigley wrote: > Decided to take the train instead in the end... gives me time to > fiddle about with my ECU settings for the Roadster ;-) > > 1 GBP (Pound Sterling) = 1.72866 USD or 1.46675 Euro > so.. yeah.. expensive.. > > On 11/30/05, john wrote: > > On Wed, 30 Nov 2005, Stephen Rigley wrote: > > >-->> 45 Sterling? sounds bad... > > >--> > > >-->Yeah.. not too many in the dismantlers in Ireland tho... most are > > >-->still on the road LOL > > > > what's a sterling compared to say a euro or a dollar? > > > > >-->> which bearing are we talking about??? makes a big difference. > > >-->Wheel. > > > > when it starts wobbling, then worry... depending on your speeds, it > > might make the journey... > > > > john > > > > ---- > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** > > Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold > > ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Dec 2005 19:20:39 +0000 From: Bruce Caruthers Subject: Re: [db] recent adventures On Wed Dec 07, 2005, john wrote: > > oh crud...
