Was wondering... what would it take to install 4matic in a 124 sedan... that has a Diesel? :) Does the 4matic use a transfer case? I can't imagine this isn't something that could be done... without welding or a sawzall... anyone have 4matic that can provide some insight? This won't be cheap, but it'll be less expensive than buying a new rig and create quite a FrankenDiesel setup. :) It solves the problem of getting out of my driveway the two or three times a year it snows or freezes here... Lift? we don't need no steenkin' lift... ;) BTW, 24 degrees, #2 fuel and no problems... One question... what does it mean when you hit the rear window defroster and it just blinks? Seat heater did the same. Shut it off, tried again and it worked... was it saying, he stupid, it's too cold to be outside, what are you doing? It would be far cheaper in the long run to just keep a J-10 or XJ around for just those three days, especially since you have at least one of those in your current stable. The 'transfercase' alone is somewhere north of $2000, and that doesn't include the front axle stuff, the control systems, finding the not-available-here driveshafts or modifying ones from a 300E, etc, etc. I actually have the same engine and transmission (4matic came behind a 722.3, not the 722.4 you have) as the factory (but not available stateside) option, and had given it some thought. I decided it was too much of a pain, was going to be too expensive, and wasn't really all that worth it. It would be easier to stick an OM617 into an amc eagle, and I'd at least get low range :) And this is coming from the mad scientist who bought a pacer with a perkins marine diesel. :) K ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2005 14:38:52 -0500 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Re: [db] what if... 4matic... Well, since I know very little about any MB's except the W123 that I had, is it safe to assume that the 124 diesels didn't come to the states with the 4matic option? All the wiring and computers for the 4matic system, as well as the bulk of the drivetrain, would already be in place. This is something I have considered on and off for a couple years. J.B.
