You'll actually cause more problems without the thermostat, provided we're talking about your 300D. Your car should go down the road somewhere between 80 and 90 degrees C, and it shouldn't take too long to get there. Any less will cause problems with heater function, will likely cause a degradation of performance (since diesels do not run well cooler, unlike a gasser), and will certainly cause the engine to carbon up faster causing a bunch of other problems. On a 617, the thermostat is really easy to replace (unlike on a 603 where it is buried). Make sure you don't unbolt the bolt in the center of the pipe on the thermostat housing, there's a good chance you'll get coolant in your face, on your felt hat, and in your beer. In lieu of that have another T-90/ model 18 to work with, wondering how hard it would be to replace the input shaft from the other T-90... it has a broken shaft while mine has a problem with 2nd gear... :) just updated my Willys page... http://wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/ now I just need to figure out to resolve the transmission problem... a friend has a T-90 out of a Willys Wagon that has a broken input shaft... but I'm thinking that a 4 speed might be nice... or better, an Automatic... of course the gears are turning and leaning toward a 240D I-4 Diesel with an Automatic and a divorced xfr case... problem will be total length... I have a T-5 out of my J10 that might work, but I doubt the output spline count and adapter would fit the Model 18... Jim, This setup has only the Pinto 2.0L engine with maybe a Pinto Bellhousing mated to the WILLYS/JEEP T-90. Engine is pinto, clutch I'm not sure, but some how they mated this 2.0L to the STOCK JEEP transmission... suspect it wasn't hard, looking at shop manuals it looks like most manual transmissions have four bolts on the front... if that's true that should open a lot of options up. :) I'm thinking that we could use that clutch and bellhousing and attach a four speed or maybe my Borg Warner T-5... the only question then becomes will the transfer case attach to the T-5 or 4 speed output? I suppose I could have Curtis measure the output shaft of the T-5 and count the splines... if by some miracle of Jeep engineering it's the same dimensions as the T-90 it would solve an incredible number of problems for me and make good use of a marginal part. ;) The Borg Warner T-5 out of my '83 J10 stepside was mariginal behind the 258. When pressed with a load I could feel it suffering... However behind the Pinto engine in a lighter vehicle it'll be fine. Would be nice to have an overdrive, that way I could drive the thing at 45 mph to work... :) I wouldn't recommend it in another FSJ unless you don't like forward movement. ;) Of course these things projects always have a way of snowballing... I could use my NP208 xfr case, but that puts the drop on the driver's side... which means I'll need to change the axles... which I'm willing to do to update and get disc brakes... I can keep it stock looking and upgrade, but I suspect this will begin to get expensive... (doesn't this sound like MOST Jeep projects? ;) I'd also get a tighter turning axle... So, the question is, what manual transmission can bolt in where a T-90 lives now and mates to a Spicer Model 18 xfr case? Don't worry about the Pinto transmission Jim, they aren't involved... someone simply used a bell housing from one and mated it to a T-90... everything aft is stock Willys. I do have access to another T-90 that has a broken input shaft out of my friend's Willys Wagon that had a 225 odd-fire in it... I guess the T-90 isn't very durable... guess that's why my '67 Wagoneer had a T-85. Hmmmm... I wonder if my buddy still has my old T-85... that should bolt right in... I think the output shafts of the T-90 and T-85 are the same... I suspect he got rid of it years ago, he's moved a few times since I pulled it out of that '67 Wagoneer in '89. :) I am going to keep the Willys CJ-2A... at least for a while. ;) I looked at a '56 Willys Pickup this morning and just couldn't get excited about it... This little CJ-2A is a kick. It'll look nice behind my J10. Other mods in the thought process is some kind of subtle, but functional roll bar, seat belts and a coupler inserted into the steering column... I figure I'll cut the shaft and insert a shear point with a coupler out of a more modern column... A smaller steering wheel might not be bad either... this one is hard to operate while holding a cell phone and a latte... ;) Ah yes, during waking hours tomorrow I need to make some calls on a top and transmissions... my bargain used top didn't fit... :( I think my son has talked me into a rattle can tan paint job... just want to make sure it's protected against rust... wife wants it baby blue and white... doesn't sound bad, but I think tan will be a good temporary color. ;) Anyone in the Seattle/Everett area have a heated garage so we can dry this thing off and spray some paint on it to preserve it? ;) OH, in other news I found an '85 3.0L TD with 235,000 miles for less than $1,500 and I still have options on that white '92 Cherokee Sport, which just happens to be missing an engine and computers... :) I doubt the 3.0L would fit in the Willys, but it'll fit in the Cherokee... Of course if I put the radiator under the bed in the back and make a divorced transfer case setup I could make it work... ok, take a deep breath... (or is that a jeep breath?) anyway... someone get my J10 back to me before I start fifteen million other Jeep projects... ;) john http://wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/ ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 00:14:08 +0000 From: john-at-wagoneers.com Subject: [db] whose turn was it to watch john? ok, who slipped up? who was supposed to keep an eye on john this week anyway? :) He just bought a '99 Grand Cherokee Laredo... 4.7L V8, Quadradrive, has the infinity sound system, sunroof, foglights, 128K miles, hitch... kind of a silver/grey... runs sweet, smooth... brakes are good... seats are a little soft, tires are ok... the guy is leaving the country on Saturday and had to sell it quickly... So, this means that john's '91 300D is officially for sale. :) It's a beautiful car but it won't tow my trailer, it won't get out of the driveway if it's really snowy, and it won't haul my '48 Willys. I also have an aversion to loading transmissions and such in the trunk... It is a beautiful car with nothing wrong, gets 28 to 30 mpg in town, almost 40mpg on the freeway in optimal conditions. Has averaged 30 mpg since I've owned it. It has recent tires, brakes (slotted cross drilled rotors on all four corners), MP3/CD (with the original factory stuff included), EUROPEAN headlights (along with the originals), heated seats and an alarm system that locks/unlocks the doors. Oh yeah, and it'll keep up with or get ahead of those obnoxious sounding little ricemobiles with the coffeecan exhausts...
