Careful, if you got a good one, it has an iron head and block, and a timing chain, and those being the case, they're a teense heavier than a 134 or a 2.5L. There doesn't appear to have been an automatic option at all, and does not appear to have been a 4x4 option. In fact, there doesn't appear to be a separate bellhousing listing, so the transmission probably has an integral bellhousing. This makes anything but a divorced mount case somewhat interesting, unless you make an adapter plate for a bellhousing yourself. You should probably consider deleting this message now. If you're feeling stupid, look to the north for an 85-87, that had a mitsu turbo diesel, 2.5L ish. Think that was available as a 4x4, but not positive. You really REALLY should delete this message now, and do not read further. If you're feeling ****REALLY**** stupid, and promise not to give curtis my address (cause he'll come down here and kick my -at-$$ for giving you ideas like this), get your hands on one of the ranger diesel transmissions. They pop up in yards from time to time. Slice the first inch or two off the bellhousing of the transmission, and weld some stock on that has enough meat that you can drill and tap. Viola, instant adapter. Then, your options are a lot bigger. You can make a pilot bushing by turning down one for your transmission to fit, and you can find a clutch that will fit the 2.2s flywheel. The stock CJ transmission might almost be small enough in bellhousing diameter to work. [FWIW, this is how you put a 460 in a pantera. Panteras came with a 351C, which had a small block pattern. The ZF transaxle needed an adapter to bolt up to something that was not small block ford patterned, so someone creative did this with a C-6 automatic. A 351C powered pantera was pretty snappy. Warm up the 351C and you could find trouble. A 400M had the same pattern (same family as a 351C), and warmed up, could outrun most non-stationary trouble. I don't want to think about a warm 460, it's probably faster than the speed of lint.] K ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 15:33:31 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] Re: more Diesel adventures... oh, curtis won't be bothered with this one... this project may be done before he finishes superdawg... ;) john On Thu, 22 Dec 2005, Kevin wrote: >-->On Thu, Dec 22, 2005 at 02:58:00PM -0800, john wrote: >-->> :) do you mean to tell me I've had something you haven't??? ;) >--> >-->While I have a rather obtuse collection, you are the only one I know >-->who has had one of those little buggers. >--> >-->> >-->> how about the mating 4speed tranny? out of an '83 ranger... >-->> >-->Well, 2wd rangers used a mazda transmission and 4wd used a mitsubishi. >-->> >-->> 2wd >--> >-->The junkyard interchange manuals don't list that engine having any >-->transmission that will work, except one from an 83 or 84 2wd diesel >-->ranger. (just kidding). Found a set of tire chains in the trunk even! And my long lost slim-jim, jumper cables and a few missing tools... that 300D trunk is much bigger than it looks. ;) I put back in Mercedes filters, parts, lubricants, literature, the old headlights, the old radio, old blower motor, old (but good) water pump and tstat... :) Trunk is full again Derick. :) I pick up my '99 WJ tomorrow morning. :) I think I'm going to use a real toolbox in the back, I had one I used in my '85 Cherokee that should work nicely. I ordered a new Bestop for my '48 Willys CJ from Central 4wd, it'll be in next week... Going to work on the tow bar setup... Going to chase down that extra T-90 over the holidays and might drag that Mazda 2.2L Diesel home as well. :) Soon as Derick is ready I'll be heading down to Centralia to visit with Superdawg and swap out my seats... :) Oh yeah, found out that this WJ is from Tacoma. Ran the VIN... no warranty work was performed, but all the recalls have been handled. :) http://wagoneers.com/WJ/rigs/99-laredo-V8/ later, john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 21:46:58 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] a few projects during the Christmas break... have a week off... contemplating a few Jeep projects... '48 Willys CJ-2A - http://wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/ replace starter relay and top, also need to fix 2nd gear in T-90 and install the top (comes in next Fri). Found an '83 Mazda 2.2L Diesel and it's mating 4speed. Question is how long is that 4 speed and can I adapt it to my Dana 18 xfr case? Looking for a few parts for the CJ-2A, found one outfit on line that looks promising: Walck's 4 Wheel Drive - think they're back in PA. Has reasonable prices on the items I need: - hood blocks (8.00) - exterior mirror (23.95)- wipers (32.95)... they've also got a 12v heater ($185) ... decided to rattle can the CJ tan... probably bed line the floorpan... '99 WJ Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8 - pick it up tomorrow... http://wagoneers.com/WJ/rigs/99-laredo-V8/ checked on a 2" lift kit... $210 at Central 4wd (Rubicon Express?) makes it... basically spacers and new shocks... Not sure I want to lift a WJ though... I guess the main thing I'm doing to the WJ tomorrow is putting on convex mirrors, setting up my tool box, finding floor mats for it and then completely convert it and my wife's WJ to Amsoil synthetics. Found out this WJ was bought new in Tacoma, WA... a west coast rig! I'm excited... sunroof, hitch, infinity sound system, quadradrive and a smooth 4.7L V8. '99 WJ Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L I6 - http://wagoneers.com/WJ/rigs/99-laredo/ need to switch it to Amsoil synthetics in the trans/axles and xfr case... Also need to fix the seat heaters I added. I think the controller has corrosion... haven't been under it since we owned it... engine and underside is spotless, amazing... (someone purchased it new in Everett, WA) '91 Grand Am - need to tighten the belts again... argghhh... hope my daughter gets a big raise so she can buy something with ONE serpentine belt instead of what is on this 2.5L I-4... :) '75 J10 Hydraulic dump trailer... need to rewire the outside lighting on the upper drive so I can plug the trickle charger in... also need to find the adapter to the six pin coupler... very cool that I've got a V8 Jeep again! :) Who cares if this thing weighs 2,000lbs! http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/J10-trailer/ '83 J10 getting 6.2L Diesel - been in work since April 2001. :( http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/SuperDawg-83-J10-stepside/ dual tanks, WJ seats, lots of superb features... will go and visit it next week... the cab inside and under and the bed have been bedlined... soon as curtis gets his shop rewired so he can setup his heaters and ventilation and paint it... when the J10 is done I have a feeling one of the WJs will go away... :) We'll see... I may be able to get away with having a WJ, SJ and a CJ... ;) I'm slightly out of control... But hey, all this experience will be a big plus when I finally put the book(s) together... (when I was cleaning up my office I found four large boxes of Jeep literature and tech manuals... I think I have enough material to write the book now... ;) where do I start though? ;) in thought process: (like I need another project... ;) (tempting though... :) '92 XJ Cherokee Sport with no engine - sold it for the engine/wiring to a friend for his mid-80's CJ-7. I could get the body and AW4 back with running gear... the Mazda 2.2L would be woefully inadequate for this task... so I'd either put the extra 4.0L I have around (it's for sale), updating the wiring to a '96... OR, pick up that '85 Mercedes 3.0L TD and AT (only $1,300!)... build a divorced case setup adapter to use the NP231... OR just quit thinking about this and focus on the other projects. ;) I don't need this XJ... I don't need the 4.0L (it's still for sale guys)... I don't need the 3.0L TD... I really don't need the 2.2L either... ;) Hey, anyone need a pair of running boards for an early '80's GMC Jimmy/Chevy Blazer K15/k5? free... come and get 'em... Mark took them off of the '83 GMC K15 when we traded for the Willys... the GMC looks nice... I hope Mark doesn't destroy this vehicle like he did the '87 XJ... or the '83 300D... speaking of which, I've got the tail lights and headlight assemblies from that 123, along with an instrument cluster and a few other odds and ends. Going prices on this stuff... remains of Mark's 300D http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/Marks-flying-82-300d.jpg You know, thinking about it... the last good Jeep was the WJ. Next to last was the XJ. The first best Jeep is the SJ. CJ's are just ok... :) ZJ, WK, XK, and KJ are simply bad news on oh so many levels... although the ZJ at least has solid axles, but still looks like a minivan. ;) Y'all have a very Merry Christmas... hope you know the reason for the season personally... later, john http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html '99 WJ 4.7L (no name... yet) His (grey) '99 WJ 4.0L (no name) Hers (white) '83 J10 6.2L (superdawg) (white?) I'm thinking that the 2.2L Mazda Diesel into the Willys might not work too well... can't find much info on the engine or the transmission (4spd). It's a great engine, had one... but the other thing that bugs me is it's an interference engine with a timing belt... if I can't find basic info on it what happens if it upchucks a valve? Then I've got to start all over again... ;) That little Pinto engine is just fine... I'm just going to fix the T-90 and use it this way I think... unless someone can verify that the 2.2L Diesel would bolt up to the bellhousing that mates to the Pinto 2.0L / t-90 and I wouldn't have to do anything really creative with the clutch... got my starter relay tonight... top shows up next week... Hey, I really need to move this chatter to a Willys list... any suggestions on a list? Or should I plead my case with Mr. Welty and start another list. ;) The 2.2L Diesel won't work in the XJ, that I know... and I'm not sure I want to spend $1,300 for that '85 3.0L with 235,000 miles to start that project. There is a nice clean '92 XJ sport without an engine or wiring that needs a new home... will put you in touch with my friend... also have that '96 4.0L and wiring harness here... simple... think simple... change the fluids on the WJs... change the starter relay and top on the Willys... :) clean out the 124... rewire stuff for the trailer, fix the tow bar, get the t-90 and call it good... :) slow breaths, in and out... ;) hmmm... would a 6.2L Diesel fit in the frame of the CJ-2A??? rofl... curtis hurry up man, I'm having Diesel withdrawal... ;) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 22:39:40 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] more Diesel adventures... they are rare... can't find anything on line about them... interference motors with timing belts, but no dimensions, weights, power, etc... do you know anything about them?
