Hebert" Subject: Re: [db] RE 1987 300TDT The actual failure rate on #14 603 heads is far less than one would be led to believe from various mailing lists and the like, and the likelihood is far less if the factory recall to remote the trap oxidizer was performed early in the vehicle's life. The trap oxidizer was know for increasing EGT's and causing premature head failure. If you do have a car with a failed head, it is relatively easy to find a #17 head to replace it. Additionally, the head from the 3.5 liter turbo with the con rod problems can be used on the 603 and is I believe a #22 head, which is also a superior casting to the #14 heads which were the ones that failed most often. The '87 300TD is unique in that is was the only 124 chassis wagon available in the US with a diesel. The 603 turbo motor was the most powerful diesel that Mercedes offered in a car until they started turbocharging the 606 in the late '90s. In good condition, it will be an excellent, reliable, fast (for a diesel) car. J.B. At 12:24 AM 1/14/2006, you wrote: >Hi, above mentioned car perked my interest. Been looking for something like this since I swapped wheels/tires between my wife's Beetle and my Jetta. I've suspected that my speedo/odo was off by quite a bit... now I'll be able to find out how far. - -- - --chuck goolsbee 02 Jetta TDi (but also looking for a 300SD or SDL) arlington, wa, usa ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2073 **********************************
