You're dealing with high compression, high pressure systems. While there isn't much risk necessarily to life and limb, mishaps will be quite costly. Cross thread one of those glowplugs and you'll find out that 25% loss in power is significant and that heads are expensive to set up... ...however, that would be a good time to change the timing belt. :) If you do decide to do it yourself, clean the engine when it's cold so you have less gunk to deal with... then carefully remove the fuel lines using a flare-nut wrench or precision tool and go for it... john On Tue, 24 Jan 2006, Charles Redell wrote: >-->Hi all, >--> >-->Sorry for the off-topic post on a non-benz... >--> >-->Dayna is trying again to fix her poor, 81 diesel rabbit truck. Replacing the glow plugs are a no-brainer in either with one "gotcha". First, there is no need to mess with the injectors as they are above and out of the way of the glow plugs. All that's required is to remove the bus bar, then the glow plugs and reverse the procedure. It's really simple, but... Before you start, stuff some shop rags between the block and the injection pump. Put them in place neatly so that anything dropping into them will be easy to retrieve. What's going to end up there? The 10 mm nuts on each glow plug. Remove those and the bus bar comes off. Remove the glow plugs, one at a time, and replace them with the new ones. I don't remember the socket size, probably 13mm, but you'll probably have to have a swivel on the socket. I don't remember torqueing the plugs down, so I probably just "snugged" them. I did drop the 10mm nuts a few times and the shop rag trick made it a non-issue. Button everything back up and you're done. It's really an easy job, just a bit tedious due to the tight clearances. This is very similar to the Dodge Powerwagon concept from a couple of years ago. In my opinion the Dodge was even cooler... Either one would work though. I wonder if either will ever make it to production. The Dodge had a diesel as well. Very nice machine.
