I'll have to break out the sunroof lube I bought from the MB dealer when I had my 240D. I've used it for everything but the sunroof.... It works pretty good on the window tracks. It's also good for the door latches. Thanks for your reply. Previous mechanics drove me NUTS on the gold eagle wagon I have. They absolutely LIVED for overtorquing bolts in aluminum without antiseize, or my personal favorite, overtorquing brake stuff about a degree short of where it strips (but is cross threaded so it leaks, and when you go to check tightness, you strip the snot out of it). You really have had more than your share with that car. Whatever happened with that 300CD your mechanic was considering selling you? Aw crap. I still have to mail you that head gasket. (!!!!!) I keep forgetting. I have this string on my finger, but can't remember why I put it there :) K ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Feb 2006 15:40:43 -0500 From: "J.B. For my commute, the E300D really makes more sense. It's quiet, rides nice, and handles much better than the 300CD. And I can't blame the car for what a previous mechanic did. I would not be able to find a similar car with a body as straight and rust free as mine, or with an interior as nice. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment. With another car, I run the risk of yet ANOTHER can of worms. At least with this one, as I find and repair issues, I know they are fixed correctly. If you send me the head gasket now, I can compare it to the head off the car. ;) J.B. At 03:27 PM 2/9/2006, you wrote: >On Thu, Feb 09, 2006 at 09:34:32AM -0500, J.B. Hebert wrote: > > No problem. Smart claims 52 mpg for city driving, 65 mpg highway, 62 combined. This is the Euro cycle, not EPA. In the real world they reach something between 50 and 55 mpg driven normally and about 40 mpg if you go flatout (80 mph :-) So it's an economical car, but not more economical than a VW Lupo or Polo TDI. I feel for ya, J.B. It sounds like you've sorted out most of the previous owner's mechanics screw-ups. You may be home free after this one. My '95 has been serviced at the local dealer almost all it's life, so you'd think it would be near perfect. WRONG!!! The first time Dennis looked at it, he found out that the power steering fluid hadn't been changed in a long time, if ever. The fluid smelled burnt, but the filter was marginal. He replaced both. So much for the dealer actually doing the service they billed for... The other thing he found were the two nuts on the oil filter housing were not MB parts. This car shows a couple of oil changes at a Houston Dodge dealer quite some time ago. Since then it was serviced here at the local MB dealer. The nuts were apparently replaced with the Dodge equivalents, 12mm vs. the MB 13. The local dealer never corrected that mistake. The Dodge nuts have been chewing up the aluminum studs. I'll get the correct ones for the next oil change. You'd think that the local dealer would have done this when they saw the error. Again, so much for the dealer performing as they advertise... I am hoping my mechanic won't find too much more abnormal on Ernestine. I have been in the frame of mind, with various cars in the past, of wanting to get rid of them because of the previous owners idiosy but have gotten over it when the problem had been fixed. Hang in there. Jon ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2097 **********************************
