Yeah I had an '88 hecho en Mexico 6.2 in a Suburban. I was not happy with the engine durability nor the rear axle design on the 1/2 ton. OTOH I was thinking maybe Isuzu could transplant some quality into GM. I like the suggestion of another older (94) Ford if I could find a really nice one and do some upgrades. I hate to spend newish vehicle $. Also I like the idea of a vehicle that has withstood the test of time. Here in the PNW cars don't rust, as some others have pointed out :-) . When I was ready to leave the shop I mentioned that I didn't think the engine was giving all she could. The mechanic looked under the hood and commented it was because of the TRAP OXIDIZER!!! Service manager called the dealer (Rasmussen in Portland) who said it's under recall, bring it in. Brought it in last Monday, they gave me a ride to my office in a new R-class. They picked me up after work and brought me to the shop. They weren't ready with the car so I was stuck there. They gave me a loaner for 2 days (not a benz but a new Taurus). When I picked the car up it had been washed and vacuumed. They gave me a piece of 3-pointed star shaped chocolate with the invoice marked $00.00 at the bottom. Car ran with noticeably more power, seemed to get better mileage, passed emissions testing with a 3X better result than 2 years ago. TODAY: About 250 mi, one week and 1/2 tank later the turbo is making not-so-nice noises (loud and uneven whine) and the power is mostly back the way it had been. It does not appear that the turbo had been checked during the recall work based on the parts used/appearance of the parts. What I have read on the recall indicates that evaluation of the turbo was to be a part of the recall work. Am I right to assume that this is related to the Oxidizer trap and/or the work done? Can I expect Rasmussen to go even further on the warranty? TIA for ideas or sympathy. In fact, it's somewhat too nice to stick at the airport in Stockton. So I think I'll stick it at the airport in Fresno instead :). I'll move my 300D to Stockton, its paint is shot anyway. The dealer is supposed to as part of the recall to test the turbo, but most don't because they forget, haven't dealt with one of these in ten years, don't want you to be without the car while they spend a week fetching parts, etc. This is because when the trap grenades, it takes the turbo out. You should be getting a free turbo out of the deal. Look at your invoice and see if they tested the output of the turbo. If they didn't, I'd be on the phone with the service advisor asking why they didn't test the output of the turbo. Rasmussen shouldn't care. They get to submit a bill to MBNA for the work. Here in > the PNW cars don't rust, as some others have pointed out :-) . you've basically come to the conclusion I came to. I knew the powerchoke was not enough truck when I bought it, but was too good of a deal to pass up. I knew I needed a dually, so was pricing them out. What I wanted in a 99+ F350 crewcab dually was going to cost me over $25k. I had a hard time thinking that the 99+ truck was going to be somewhere between three and four times the truck the powerchoke is, not including the difference in taxes (since CA license tags are based on vehicle's worth like most states), or the difference in insurance. Then I ended up with a dead chevy crew cab dually 4x4. The diesel had supposedly locked up, and cracked the TH400 in the process. I really should take pictures of the inspection cover, it's quite spectacular. Just a bit over half what I paid for the powerchoke puts a 12v cummins under the hood of the chevy, buys adapters to get it done, and buys a 4L80E and computer to replace the TH400 (or easily buys a gear vendors overdrive and a new TH400) and after all that, I still have enough money to paint the truck and line-x the bed. I can get body panels out of a catalog or any junk yard for it, and the dana 60 front and corp 14 bolt rear are very serviceable. The funny thing is every time I get ready to sell the powerchoke, it goes and makes itself useful, and doesn't really care what I do with it. During the time I've had it, it has done duty as virtually every other vehicle I own at one point in time or another. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a first gen powerchoke to someone, but would caution that sometime in 1997 international changed cam position sensors which caused the reliability of a $90-$200 (depending on where you buy it) sensor to decline. This sensor is the achilles heel of the powerchoke electronics, and WILL put you on the side of the road if it fails. Granted, not all 97-03 trucks suffer from sensor failures, but...
