I have two 300SDs. The first is an 84 with 300 000 miles, but a rebuilt engine. It has served me well. Just purchased a second one, an '85, with about half that mileage in original, unmolested condition. After a week of ownership it's developed a massive oil leak at the front of the engine. I'm guessing the front crankshaft seal. Any list wisdom on my woes would be appreciated. I was down two litres on the dipstick. The other symptom is the power steering began to act up at the same time. There is so much oil at the front it's coming off the v-belts and sprayilng up on each of the fenders when the hood is open. Wondering if the oil is causing the belt to slip. Checked the power steering fluid and it was down about two inches from the top. Hard to pinpoint more than that as there is so much oil. The timing chain cover and front gaskets make sense. I'll have a look at those items. Retreated in defeat. I figured I'd just swap the driver & passenger seats, but they are not the same part, because of the seatbelt mounts. So I thought I'd just swap the bottoms. I undid the bolts holding the tracks to the bottom frame/motors assembly, but the tracks are still stuck tight. Well, maybe they shift a little when you push things back & forth. Maybe this is something that becomes obvious if you pull the actual seat out of the car completely...? I didn't do that becuase 1. They're heavy. 2. It started to rain. Are seat issues adequately covered in the shop manual? There's a guy on Ebay selling video CDs showing him rebuilding the seats for $20. Is it worth it, or is this something that's reasonable to figure out by doing? - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2006 16:34:03 -0800 From: carbucks Subject: Re: [db] 300SD seats Hi Jerry, I did this same job on my 300SD last summer and ran into some of the same issues. Became a whole lot simpler when I removed the seats. The manual instructions were easy enough to follow. In fact once the seats were out, the remainder of the process was almost intuitive. Discovered it's quite easy to remove the leather/MBtex from the seat bottoms once you have the bottom seat frame removed. By pushing down on the seats, you can 'unlatch' the seat covering from the frame. I had to swap the bottome seat frame on mine as one of the seat springs was broken. Hope this helps, Martin Jerry Kaidor wrote: >Hi guys, > > Went out to mess with the seats on the 300SD today. Retreated in >defeat. Kaleb nailed it. The PO or their mechanic had routed the upper oil cooler line too close to the belt for the air conditioner compressor. Over time, the belt had worn a groove and eventally a hole into the cooler line. Now I just need to find an online parts supplier who will ship to Canada. Thanks to all who responded, Martin Kaleb C.
