Yes. 82 was the first year of turbo for the sedan. 81 was wagon. Don't remember coupe. 80 would also still have the annoying chrysler climate control setup, but would probably have the smoother shifting setup for the transmission. I *THINK* 80 got parallel plugs, but don't remember that offhand. FWIW, the 78 non turbo 300D with an engine that will drink a quart in 1500-2000 turns in 26 mpg on the highway with a bad alignment and needing a valve adjustment. Sounds like it still needs one injector dealt with too. The alignment is being corrected tomorrow morning by the dealer after I spent two weekends swapping out bushings, tie rods, and upper control arms. I know of someone who bought a used transmission from them for an R107 with a v8. Can't remember how much it was, but it was under $500 - want to say $425. The five speed in my 190D came from aurora, as I bought the car with a rather unhappy transmission. The midsize (115/123/124/210) and compact (201) didn't always have a turbo. Euro cars are different, of course. HOWEVER< $3,500 for a tranny replacement seems quite obscene and reminds me of the reasons why I started these lists. Rebuilding a tranny like ours shouldn't cost more than about $1,500 on the bench, maybe 2k. More like a grand. Prices will vary, find a shop that doesn't drool or shudder when you mention Mercedes. The engineering that goes into these devices is superb, and as such, if you know what you're doing, they should be quite easy to refurbish. A used tranny with a guarantee from a reputable outfit like Aurora or even Benz Friends (if they are still around) can be had for $500 to a grand... R&R is probably in the 4 to 6 hr range, I can call my wrench friend or wander over to his shop and look in the flat rate manual, but even at 6 hrs at $100/hr you're still at $600. So max price with the high end is still only about $2,600. I'd estimate that you could have it rebuilt & R&R'd for less than $2k, most likely around $1,200 to $1,500... Jim Startup in Everett would probably be in that ball park. Now I could be off, don't know what the parts for the 123 trans might run, but even these new fangled computerized exoctic transmissions don't cost more than $2,200 to have rebuilt... and we're in the 4 to 6 hr labor range... most shops are around $75/hr. Do the math, make a few calls... YOU DO NOT ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR... happy shopping... john On Tue, 21 Mar 2006, Steve Fallin wrote: >-->I thought about a replacement from a wreck but it seemed a bad risk >-->considering that any replacement would also be 22 years old.
