FWIW, there was a 124 gasser on worlds scariest police chases a few weeks ago. A friend taped it and showed it to me (you know "hey, did they put v8s in your white car? check this out"). The crown vics georgia state police have were having extreme difficulty catching the car - probably a 400E or something, which would just walk away from the crown vics any time it wanted. One of the cops did a pit maneuver at over 120 mph, which washed out the crown vic. pretty trippy :) K ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 17:46:18 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] trip planning On Mon, 27 Mar 2006, Kevin wrote: >-->On Mon, Mar 27, 2006 at 05:09:57PM -0800, john wrote: >-->> hey, what's the speed limit in Montana these days? is it >-->> still unlimited during daylight hours??? >-->> >-->> I want to see if my '91 300D with a 2.5L TD can really do 124 mph. :) >-->> >-->> (while the state might let me do it, not sure if my spouse will... ;) >--> >-->One might suggest a dragstrip, but it would take a really long one to hit 124 >-->in a stock diesel. >--> >-->FWIW, there was a 124 gasser on worlds scariest police chases a few weeks >-->ago. It is a '98 or '99 I think. It handles pretty well for an American sedan, and has good power. BUT its stability even at low speeds leaves something to be desired. Too much rolling and pitching over uneven surfaces. I would not want to test its limits for handling on a curvy road. My old Jaguar handles like a dream at speed, on any sort of road, curvier the better in fact, well into the triple digits. ;) As for oil burners I'm very impressed with the VW Jetta. It cruises quite comfy in the 90~110 MPH range, all while getting well over 45MPG. I have only done one long trip in it (Seattle <-> San Francisco) and it did great. Never have tested it at the limit of the rev range, but I suspect it will do a bit over 120. I've considered entering it in the Silver State Open Road Challenge in the 100 or 110 MPH class, for the sheer novelty of doing that in a Diesel. Oh, and John, two things for you: 1. Montana does now have a speed limit. They are not very strict about enforcing it unless you are driving like a lunatic, especially around other cars. If you are reasonable and prudent, you should be fine. Just don't fly past peole 20+ MPH mor than they are travelling, and don't do stupid stuff like passing on the right. 2. I should be able to pick up some, if not all of the oil this week. - -- - --chuck goolsbee 02 Jetta TDi (but also looking for a 300SD or SDL) arlington, wa, usa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 19:18:14 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] trip planning On Mon, 27 Mar 2006, Greg Fiorentino wrote: >--> >-->I drive a CVPI at work. I know that the ford explorers and broncos are quite frightening... they're extremely unstable... I could roll one of those in a heartbeat... they just don't feel right. I wouldn't think twice about taking a jeep cherokee around a corner at speed, they handle well and are stable if you treat them right, if you don't know what you're doing they will go over, but you almost have to work at it... but an explorer frightens me simply turning a corner... The ml series seem to do pretty well, test drove the latest model in seattle (got scolded for making tire noises... ;) (so did bruce's wife)... also test drove bruce's ml 320, it felt solid, handled quite well, but after driving it I drove my WJ and like it much more... speaking of bruce's ml, it is for sale, and it is immaculate... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 19:25:24 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] trip planning On Mon, 27 Mar 2006, chuck goolsbee wrote: > -->> BUT its stability even > -->> at low speeds leaves something to be desired. I have similiar daydreams... one recurring daydream includes them closing off the express lanes on I-5 and letting me out there by myself...
