Everything is on hand: * A Robinair vacuum pump * two-gauge charging manifold * a rebuilt compressor * new receiver-drier, pressure switch, expansion valve * A can of flush. * Replacement O-rings and R134A conversion kit * 8 ounces of Polyol Ester A/C oil. * 3 cans of R134A refrigerant. The old compressor has to go because the front seal is leaking. And at 230,000 miles the rest of it is probably no great shakes either. R134a and a rebuilt compressor is probably not the hot ticket for a first line car, but for a standby car to keep at the airport it should do fine. One challenge is to flush the system. They have little pressurized bottle flush tools that squirt flush into hoses, but I didn't buy one of those. Instead, I'm going to try the "hoses held high with funnel" trick to get flush into the lines, and then clear it out with a blowgun with a rubber tip. Since the compressor was operational, the system should be basically clean, just need to get the old oil out. I don't feel quite up to this today, feeling lingering queasy effects of a stomach flu. But my wife is in a cleaning frenzy which may drive me out of the house anyway :). - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2006 11:33:54 -0500 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] A/C day Doesn't 8 ounces of oil sound like too much? Maybe it's just an 8 ounce container. I thought I remembered something about 3 or 4 ounces of oil being all that's needed. Otherwise, definitely sounds like a good attack plan. The normal R12 capacity is 2.2 pounds according to the engine compartment sticker ( which is a little torn and obscured, but I'm pretty sure I got it right ). R134a capacity is 10% less, say 2 pounds. So, 6 ounces of oil. I have an 8 oz bottle cuz that's how they come. I also have 2 ounces of oil in a can of refrigerant, to be added to the running system. I plan to put two ounces in the compressor, 2 ounces in the receiver/drier, and add two ounces to the running system when I charge it. The reason for all this fuss is that the R4 compressor has no sump - the entire A/C coolant circuit is it's "sump". I imagine that if you try to add all the oil to the compressor itself, it could hydraulic lock. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jun 2006 10:17:42 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jerry Kaidor" Subject: RE: [db] A/C day Anybody know where the evaporator ( cold radiator ) is in a W126 300SD? You do this by dumping the Diesel Purge in a can, and running the fuel inlet and return lines into the can. It may be that fiddling around loosened some carbon, which is stuck in an injector. 2) If that doesn't work, the problem is either an injector or a damaged prechamber. You can figure out which cylinder by cracking open the fuel connector on each injector, one by one. If openning a fuel line causes the noise to stop, that's the bad cylinder. Pull the injector and visually inspect. 3) One more possibility: on my 190DT, which has the same engine, you must remove the inlet manifold to service the glow plugs. If this is the case with your car, he may have compromised the inlet manifold gasket when he replaced it. Brian has this pretty decent '68 Jeepster that has a transmission problem. He's in a family situation where job losses have set them back... The transmission has a problem on his Jeepster and someone quoted him $900. That seems a bit steep to me, but I don't have time to crawl under it and check it for him. Maybe one of the Seattle-Snohomish-Everett folks can get in touch with him and help him out. So, here's the plea. 1) help Brian fix his '68 Jeepster 2) buy Brian's '68 Jeepster for at least $1,700 or more 3) do something to help him get it fixed here's some pictures of it. http://wagoneers.com/JEEPS/68-Jeepster/ALL.html I've only met Brian once, and he's corresponded with both Jim Blair and me. He's a decent guy, hard working and honest. If someone can help him out with a wrench or a sale, that would be great... I'd vote for the wrench work... I'm being tempted by no less than three Jeeps at this point... but am resisting the urge, it's very hard, I remember when the '68 Jeepsters came out and they are so very, very cool. (my first car was a '68 Mustang!) If I didn't have 7 Jeeps of my own right now.... oh wait, 8. :) Brian, email me your phone number, if I get some time later this evening I might try to look at it for you... I can't imagine a manual transmission problem costing $900... You need to contact an honest mechanic, like Jim Startup over in Everett, Washington. :) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: b max John, I ask, because I've got about a week to come up with 1700 bucks to make more of the back mortgage payment, and a car payment. I hate this...if I get rid of the car, I cannot get to work (no carpool, co-workers, or busses to ride), and lose the house...and I need to make the house payment too. You've seen the Jeep before...and all that stuff I've mentioned goes with it, the FSJ interior stuff, the power steering(s), the linkage, the Turbo 400+Dana 20 combo out of that running Wagoneer...heck, if you have any interest in the 327 at all, that too. It isn't perfect, but it was my daily driver. I don't know how to exactly diagnose a manual trans problem, maybe it's just a simple as a throwout bearing...however, the Turbo 400 came out of a driving Jeep, and the fluid is bright red. I just don't have the quoted $900 bucks for "the repair" (whatever that meant), and sure cannot have the Jeep off the road for the stipulated 2-3 weeks. I almost wonder if I quited up the valve slap noise and now I can hear the injectors more now. I read somewhere that you should re-do the injectors at about 100k. I'm going to replace mine in another wekk or so and see if that fixes my problem. My car sounds like a panzer going down the road........ ('82 300dt) - --- "Pedro L.
