Now it looks like a shift lever instead of torn rubber with an exposed nut at the top, and is much more pleasant to rest my hand on. Problem is: it jingles. Sounds like to large washers on a bolt jingling at certain engine RPMs. it feels pretty good, just a tiny bit of slop. And it shifts great. Going under the car presently (saw an old message in the digests about bushings and the automatic transmission linkage, and one about retainer pins on a manual transmission linkage) to see if there is anything obvious to someone who hasn't a clue what should really be there. John, I'm thinking that the drain is at the lowest point of the area under the springs, nearest to the firewall. You may have an accumulation of dirt that is preventing the water from draining. Or, as in one of my vehicles, someone used expanding foam in that area for some dumb reason. If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll take another look. Marc Z. Luckily no injury or other damage. I found a replacement housing and mirror on Eekbay for much cheaper than just the glass. Problem: The assembly and mirror purchased is for an electrically controlled mirror, not manual. If I am to use it I must replace the entire assembly. Since it has an "Objects in mirror may be closer than they appear" type of glass, ability to control from inside the vehicle is not as critical for me. The question is, how do I remove the current assembly and interior trim plate and controller, then mount the new mirror without breaking anything? Perhaps one of has done this and already made the mistakes I would no doubt make if I were not to benefit from your experience!
