Seattle to Vegas... end of December... could be interesting... Two possible routes: ROUTE 1: Seattle - Boise - Salt Lake City - Vegas http://JohnMeister.com/tmp/sea-las-route-1.jpg ROUTE 2: Seattle - Portland - Medford - Sacramento - Bakersfield - Vegas (no picture... none of the mapping stuff on line recommends this. ;) Route 1 is about 2,578 miles round trip - est time one way 21+hrs Route 2 is about 2,704 miles round trip - est time one way 24+hrs ************** Question I have is how bad is the route on I-84 and I-15 in the middle of winter? ************** My wife is concerned about the section between Ashland, OR and Redding, CA on I-5... although I would think the Boise-SLC-etc route would be worse... of course we could drive the coast and cut over by SF... would add some time... slower route... but would avoid serious snow... Looking at air fare vs. fuel... minimum air fare for three of us is $750, plus car rental there... Driving costs depends on which vehicle we use... est. minimum 20 mpg at $3/gal, apx. 130 gallons or $390. Add two extra hotels, or about $200. $750 + $150 (900) - oh forgot about parking at SeaTac... add $90 - $980... vs $390 + $200 ($590) --- seems like driving is a no-brainer... Driving is more fun... less hassle... more scenery... :) Now, the next dilema... WHICH vehicle to take... :) While I wouldn't mind taking the '48 CJ-2A... that would be a brutal trip... the J10 is out for two reasons... not assembled and only holds 2. The '92 xj should be long gone... that leaves the '99 WJ, the '91 GW or the '91 300D. Right now the only options are the '99 WJ and the '91 300D... for winter my choice will be the '91 GW running on Diesel... We'll see... still have the road trip coming up at the end of July... Need to do some repairs on my 300D... not sure if the '91 GW is going to be ready yet... Either way my thinking is to drive east through Glacier National Park, head over to South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore/Rapid City) and then over to Mitchell (home of the Corn Palace) to visit with in-laws, then turn around on I-90 and come home through Yellowstone... will probably come in through the Big Horns up north... :) You know, if I take the 300D on all these trips I might be able to earn shadowfax's second high mileage award... he's at 225,000 or so now... what's the next one? 500KM? only 100k away... ;) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2006 22:32:11 -0700 From: "William Dentzel" Subject: [db] '83 300D amber light and starter key My 1983 300D, for many years I turn the key, little amber pre-heater light goes on, then turn the key a bit more and the starter turns the engine over and it starts. (Although can only respond to the diesel-benz list, not all those other cross-posted ones...) Anyway, Brooke and I used to cover that route pretty regularly, what with all our year-round drives between SF and BC before we moved up here. With rare exception, the roads are pretty darn clear. The only problems we ever had were when there were massive forest fires in the area and visibility (and air quality) sucked, but that was in the summer. We had snow, sure, but it was never all that bad, and the road is kept clear since it is such a major route. Except for the Lake Shasta area, I had pretty good cell phone signal (Nextel) through just about the entire route, so even if you did run into a problem, you would probably be able to call for help (not to mention the State Patrols regularly roam the roads to check for disabled cars). I mean, you can always hit the freak storm, but other than that, I wouldn't worry about it. Never ran into more than a couple of (fresh) inches on the actual roadway. - -bkc Lynnwood, WA '76 MB 240D [W115.117/616.916] '93 MB 300D 2.5 Turbo [W124.128/602.962] (replaces ML) '92 Toyota Celica GT (wife's old car) '00 MB ML320 [W163.154/M112.942] (to be sold, hopefully) On Sat Jun 24, 2006, john wrote: > > planning a trip to Vegas over the Christmas break... > > Seattle to Vegas... end of December... could be interesting... > > Two possible routes: > > ROUTE 1: Seattle - Boise - Salt Lake City - Vegas > http://JohnMeister.com/tmp/sea-las-route-1.jpg > > ROUTE 2: Seattle - Portland - Medford - Sacramento - Bakersfield - Vegas > (no picture... none of the mapping stuff on line recommends this. ;) > > Route 1 is about 2,578 miles round trip - est time one way 21+hrs > Route 2 is about 2,704 miles round trip - est time one way 24+hrs > > > ************** > Question I have is how bad is the route on I-84 and I-15 > in the middle of winter? > ************** > > My wife is concerned about the section between Ashland, OR and > Redding, CA on I-5... although I would think the Boise-SLC-etc route > would be worse... of course we could drive the coast and cut > over by SF... would add some time... slower route... but would > avoid serious snow... > > Looking at air fare vs. fuel... minimum air fare for three of > us is $750, plus car rental there...
