I don't know if the diesels were affected in that year by the deteriorating harness insulation issues, but I know from experience that the M104 in our previous 95 C280 was hit. It produced intermittent engine electrical problems. It's probably worth a closer visual examination of as much of the engine wiring as you can reach. The most obvious point on ours was where the wiring ran along the head to the ignition coil packs on top of every other spark plug. Cracked insulation covering corroded wires that looked like a neglected positive battery terminal. We now see one advantage of the mechanical dash oil pressure gauge of the W123, even if it makes it a little tricky/potentially messy to pull the dash.
