That's a pretty decent rate... Would not want to be in a Honda for such a crash. john On Sat, 1 Jul 2006, Andreas Kreft wrote: Am S|nnavend 01 Juli 2006 06:22, hest Du schrieven: > very interesting... > > http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/354/C8232/ > > the structural integrity is impressive... I'll listen to There's a pretty accurate translation at http://www.whnet.com/4x4/crashes.html "We have a mass ratio of about 1 to over 2 and for the Smart this is already a very heavy collision. It corresponds to a velocity of far over 70 km/h. This is already very fast and very hard. - The Smart only fell over after, after the potentially dangerous events. That it came to a rest on its side may of course make it more difficult to rescue potentially injured passengers." > it a few more times... We have zillions of microcars (way shorter than four meters) around in Europe. Nowadays they have a quite stiff body structure, because they are too short to have a serious energy-absorbing crumple zone. That's why our big rigs like the 5 series, E/S class, A6/A8 - even a Passat is considered a huge car here - have a relatively soft crumple zone to give the occupants of a microcar a fair chance to survive in a crash. Actually, Mercedes proudly advertised this behaviour as "Kompatibilitdt", compatibility, when the W220 was introduced. I appreciate this. My personal ride was our family's 1988 VW Golf before I bought my W124, and luckily I once crashed into a Honda Civic, but not into a, say, W140 or an aluminium-made Audi A8. But on the other hand, if you buy a car that weighs two tons and is longer than five meters, you (and I) want it to be rock-solid but not wimpy. > amazing... I wonder what the end result was for all the passengers > involved... anyone know? They claim that the S class passengers could simply step out of the car after the crash, find themselves absolutely uninjured and call an ambulance for the guys in the Smart who would have suffered some major internal injuries. Still, they should have been able to survive. A friend just called... he's got to move... he's got a dead '68 Jeepster... come and get it he says... I'm on my way up to Arlington to Tom's pick-a-part clearance sale, prices are right... free... (local folks get in touch with me... I'll take more pix shortly and post them... most of the stuff is pretty rough... he does plan to sell the '51 pickup, pix already noted before, it's rough too...) But wait, there's more... I'm heading up to another friend's place and get to drive his XKE!!!! yee haw... what a day, and, I think I figured out how to solve my statistics problems!!! PTL. so, now my life has gotten even more complicated... I need to whittle my fleet down to, oh, say, three vehicles... and this is what I have to select from: '99 GC (wife's) WJ 4.7L V8 (she might drive the benz... maybe...) '91 GW (omega) getting my 6.2L Diesel and all the goodies gathered for superdawg I plan to use this as a daily driver... (or maybe I should put the 6.2 in this... no, just kidding curtis... :) '91 300d (shadowfax) A superb automobile (maybe, just maybe my wife will accept this as her runabout... I'd like to keep this car, it's great... 27-30mpg in town...) '83 J10 stepside (superdawg)... a beauty... current plan is to revert to stock not practical, but a pleasure to drive... '48 CJ-2A like this little jewel... fun, but impractical wife would roll this thing out into the highway in a nanosecond... coming home today or this weekend, the surprise phone call: '68 Jeepster with a bad trans... 225 V6/t86a/dana 20... getting a Th400/d20 with it... (from Jim Blair, thanx jim) May have a shop do the conversion, no time... a very cool vehicle that is practical With an AT my wife and daughter could drive... removeable top... these things are so cool... I remember seeing the ads for these things in the '60's... was supposed to come home... '48 cj-2a... can't get it up here, will let it go... don't have time, space or desire... soon to go away: '88 XJ (getting this in the swap for the '92 XJ)... robbing the front clip for brian (list mom for fsj/xj lists) axles are almost 10" wider than the cj-2a, but might work on the Jeepster... hmmmmm... '67 J100 panel... rambo, already at his new house '78 J10 Golden Eagle ... hooch, already at his new house also '75 J10 hydraulic dump trailer - useful, stays I'd like to keep the '99 wj, the '91 SJ, the '91 300d and one other toy... but that's four and a hard sell... :) '48 cj-2, '83 j10 or the '68 Jeepster... the Jeepster might win at this point... we'll see... would be as much fun to tow behind the GW as the cj... off and running... blessed and thankful... y'all have a great fourth... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2006 17:10:51 -0500 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] Re: smart cars crash test With their freshly redesigned Civic, Honda is touting some serious work they did on the crashworthiness.
