On to the next job.... ( My wife is getting jealous of my car ) The passenger side front door needs some attention. I have a new power seat switch. Can't replace it without removing the interior trim panel. The bottom part of the panel is held with plastic prongs that have a clip-like action on the sheet metal. I forget which way they point. You have to shift the trim panel until the prongs let go. If you just lever it off with a flat bar or a big screwdriver, the prongs will break. Anybody know which way the prongs point? And which way I have to move the trim panel to get them to let go? I'd really rather not break them. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2006 21:33:14 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] sorting it all out... the '92 xj is gone... the '88 xj is getting parted when Jim has time... :) thanx jim... the '68 Jeepster needs the transmission fixed and some paint, and I'm thinking it's going to find a new home... maybe early next year... might use it for our rare snow. it's a cool Jeep, but the CJ-2A is a better investment long term. the '48 CJ-2A, alpha, is probably going to stick around... still need to fix the trans, install the top... it doesn't take much space, not costing anything and is a nice fun toy... will look good behind my full size jeeps. the '91 GW, aka, omega, is going to get the 6.2L and will be my daily driver, or if the economy isn't as expected this may displace the '99 WJ if my wife agrees... Now all I need is one of those cool Aussie front bumpers for this thing. :) the '83 J10 stepside, aka, superdawg, looks to be getting the 360 from Omega, the '91 GW... I'm getting a 727 from Joe in Everett... might keep the NP208 in the dawg because of the 4.10 gears... that way I can roast tires... or maybe I'll use the NP219. :) Long term I may still look for another Diesel for the dawg, but at this point not having to rebuild an engine or transmission to get him up and running makes this driveline a winner. Not going to drive him daily so economy isn't an issue. the '91 300D may displace the '99 WJ if the '91 GW works out as expected... need to get a fuel tank heater to run SWVO in the Grand Wagoneer... :) well, back to stats homework... 2 more weeks!!!! john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2006 08:45:22 -0500 From: acordova-at-texas.net Subject: Re: [db] Which Way Plastic Prongies? On a W124, the prongs point down, so you just lift the panel up to both remove from the window edge and release the prongs. I can't remember how my W123 did it when I replaced the driver's window regulator a million years ago, but I think I partially broke that one. I would think it makes the most sense for the prongs to point down. Any weight in the map pocket would only serve to hold it tighter, and it allows you to lift the panel up to remove it. I'd bet a nickel that they point down on models older than the W124. The valves were mostly a little tight. The chain was stretched about 1 degree. That is, the harmonic dampener pointer showed 1 degree ATDC when the cam marker was right on. Somewhere on the Net, I read that you need to start watching it at about 5 degrees of stretch, and replace it when it gets to 10 degrees of stretch. So one degree is, I guess, pretty OK. The car seems to be a little more peppy at the low end. Quite drivable, but still not as good as my 300D in Fresno. I might check the IP timing and tweek the ALDA, or just punt and drive it to Stockton. BTW, the valve adjusting wrenches have no torque feature. How does that fellow who always uses a torque wrench deal with them? Lot of mechanics feel in this process. These are actually the most sensitive valve adjusters I've ever seen. The reading with the locknut loose means nothing. So you have to walk the two nuts around - loosen this one, tighten that one, then measure. Not too bad once you get used to it. Today is Passenger Door day. Already replaced the chrome latch pull thing ( which had busted where the big handle screwed into it ). Now to replace the power seat switch. The replacement is a later vintage that has one extra wire - which doesn't seem to do anything as far as I and my ohmmeter can tell. I need to install a pigtail and connector in the passenger compartment - going to the battery, or at least an always-on circuit. The purpose - to have a connection for a small solar cell to keep the battery up to snuff out at the airport. I saw something intriguing on TV the other day: a little gizmo consisting of a solar cell and a fan, that clips on the window and constantly blows air into the car. They claim it keeps the interior MUCH cooler than without. One problem I see with that is that the window has to be a little bit open, which is a huge detriment to security. I wonder how hard it would be to build in something to do the same thing, only using the normal ventilation ducts? - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2006 05:38:47 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jerry Kaidor" Subject: Re: [db] Gutless 300SD Tuning Progress *** I tried to send this to Brian, but for some reason, ATT Worldnet doesn't like my IP, and bounced my mail back. - Jerry Kaidor >> Jerry Kaidor wrote: >>> >> When I first got my 300SD, it was dangerous to drive in traffic it was >> so slow.
