It was hot, I couldn't see into the alternator to position it properly, my wife was standing by tapping her foot - "You finished yet"? Somehow I managed to crack both mounting ears :(. Strangely enough, it worked - but the charging voltage was high - about 14.7 volts. To me this meant that the battery was toast. We went about our business, and then the car wouldn't start at the restaurant. Same restaurant where it wouldn't start the other day, go figure. I jumped it with the battery box and we proceeded to the Home Depot, where we loaded a vanity into the back seat and strapped a 16-foot extension ladder onto the roof ( over some soft padding, natch ). At the Home Depot, it wouldn't even jump with the box. I called AAA, and they sent out a japanese pickup with an electrical connector on the front. No joy with that, either. We called our friends at the complex, and they sent out the "batmobile" - our manager's girlfriend's black '70 Camaro. Popping the hood again, I noted that the cracked regulator/brush unit had shifted - and was getting hot! I reached down and physically busted it off the back end of the alternator. When the Batmobile arrived, we jumped the Mercedes and it started right up. Drove back to the complex, unloaded without stopping the engine, drove back to the airport. As I explained to my friends, the neat thing about a diesel (in this situation ) is that it doesn't use ANY electricity to run. Even though it's a bitch to start. When we got back to the airport, there wasn't even enough juice left to roll up the windows. ( But they did go up with a little help from my hand ) So the plan now is to buy a new battery & fly it out to Stockton. And put the original regulator/brush unit back in - CAREFULLY. If it charges, well & good. If not, I leave the battery disconnected and come back with a new alternator. - Jerry ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2228 **********************************
