Popped it into the car, went back to the trunk for something - and locked my keys inside the trunk! Called AAA, they sent out a locksmith. The locksmith was unable to get into the trunk. So I called my wife and flew back to San Carlos, where she gave me her key. Back to Stockton... I put the old regulator/brush unit back into the alternator, hooked up the battery, and started'er up. The bus voltage quickly went up to 14.0V, and then with a bit of revving, 14.1 volts. Looked good to me, so the problem was the battery all along. Funny thing is, the bad battery was only one year old. And it's a Diehard. Those used to be pretty good. I'm going to try charging it in the garage. And if my broker still has the receipt, maybe I can trade it in for a new battery. It should still be under warranty. If it does a Linda Blair trick (the 360), I would assume you will have to replace the cylinder anyway, so you should be able to get aggressive with your attempts. A double squirt of graphite powder in the slot, some more on the key, then maybe tap the key with a small hammer to try to get it to seat all the way. I asked him, have you ever seen one of these before... nope. I'm impressed. It's awesome to work with a real mechanic. The two of us had that trans out in no time at all... a refreshing experience after having my other friend attempt to help. http://www.wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/31-Aug-2006-Clutch-T90/ALL.html Hopefully this evening we'll have the clutch, throwout arm and bearing and reassemble this thing. I can't see any reason why we won't be able to put it back together. Oh, the "new" t90 I picked up had been a side-loader, the case was cracked on the side but plugged up... so we're using my "old" case with the best of both parts. LW, I'll be able to drive my flatfender this weekend!!! :) After looking at what it takes, manual transmissions no longer frighten me. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://JohnMeister.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ** http://freegift.net *** http://greatcom.org/laws/languages.html ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2006 13:08:22 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] 82' 300SD ignition cylinder rotates 360 degrees this does not sound good... Or, really, at all. It probably sulfated up. Hmm, according to the Sears website, they have a 1.5 year full replacement warranty. - Jerry > > extra battery? I have been reading various forums all day, and it seems that this will be a lot of work, but not as bad as what the 190d pics show.. I am now able to get the key in, but it will not turn. If someone can get a look at the normal off position for the little hole in the collar (the insert hole to release the cover), that would help me.. Should it be right next to the off postion for the key (about 12:50 on a clock), or should it be in the 12:20 position? With some jiggling, I can get mine to go in either way. It seems that it is only the front that rotates 360 degrees... Still can`t seem to get it to turn. I have tried all 4 of my keys including the valet key.. Has anyone ever used a slide hammer to remove one of these? Any ideas are appreciated before I go into hack mode with drills, dremmels, slide hammers, etc.. I am lucky it happened in the driveway I guess.. Dan john wrote: >this does not sound good...
