Well, if you want the diesel 4matic, they made them overseas. Unfortunately, unless you were creative, you'd have to greymarket it or wait five years or so. The 4matic 300E/300TE actually didn't get that lousy of mileage, certainly better than a wagoneer, and since diesel is more expensive... They give $650 for it if it passed smog when it was last required to, and has been licensed for the past two years. The computers know nothing about value of vehicles, they just send it out before the registration becomes due to tempt people. And for a beat up old fairmont, $650 might be attractive. The shortsighted and stupid part is that the 20 year old car will do less damage to the environment than the resources consumed/soiled in making a new car. But, since that doesn't happen in the bay area, they are all for it. [This does not take into account that the vehicle that got the letter was burning biodiesel.] K ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 14:00:34 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] RE: using quantitative methods to decide... The factory option (not available here) was a 603 (think 87 300D) with a 722.3. If I was going this route, I'd probably try to get either a front half or a front 3/4 shipped here, then find a dead 124 to finish the body with. Would need to keep the US VIN, and would probably be easier if it was a diesel to start with. The other option would be to get an 87 300D and add the 4matic stuff to it. Would require some futzing with the EPC to find out what the transmission differences were on the german 300D 4matic and the 300D were to start with, then crawl under a 4matic car here.
