Diesel content :-) Cold mornings have reached us here in Ireland... "the clank" is back... if the car ('88 190D) is started normally (no revving) it clanks badly... if its revved to say 4krpm immediately after starting, the clank disappears.. its repetition is engine speed related. We replaced the vacuum pump last year and the engine shock, it seemed to go away for awhile (altho the weather did get warmer then too..). It is due an oil + filter change so might try that on Sat morning to see if it helps.. any other ideas? If not, they are a bear to start even in moderate temperatures (under 45 degrees or so). My '95 started fine without plugging in down to -10 (never had to try lower than that). Right now, with 5 dead glow plugs, I'm plugging it in to prevent excessive cranking. Alternately, my 300CD with the 617 motor would start without glowplugs almost immediately and would do so well below freezing, but I had to plug it in when it got into the single digits if I didn't want to kill the battery.
