It was driving me nuts. To track down the problem, I finally let it run down until it stalled dead. The tank still read 1/4. I had planned ahead, and brought along two 1 gallon bottles of Diesel. I added one gallon, and after cranking a bit, it started up like a champ. Took it home. I disconnected the fuel line under the tank, and let it drain out completely into a pan. I was able to retrieve 3/4 of a gallon. I then stuck the tube from my Oilboy as far down the filler neck as it would go, then pumped and probed. I drew out some foam, but that was it. The problem was the sender. You can remove the sender without removing the tank, various models have various methods to access it. On the 123's sedans, you have to remove the first aid kit from the back shelf. I'm not sure how you get access on the station wagon, but there should be an easy way. Disassemble it, clean it carefully, and replace. You need to pay particular attention to the contact surfaces, which are fine wires, stretched taut. Go over these lightly with a mild abrasive, like 1000 wet or dry.
