If it's completely dead, other than fuses, it could be the cruise control amplifier. If it won't hold a nice steady speed but otherwise tries to work, it could be worn out contacts that I think live in the CC amp. Also check all the linkages, and make sure there's almost no slack in them. They basically work when they want to. What is odd, now that I think about it, is that these lights turn on (when they work) when I turn the ignition key to the run position (before starting). The first, is the cruise control amplifier which is located under the dash, driver's side. It's a box about 4-5 inches square, aluminum cover. There is an article somewhere on the net that describes some fixes for it. The second is the actuator in the engine compartment next to the power steering pump. It is boxy, has a set of wires going to it, and a rod to the pedal linkage. I am having a minor issue with mine where when using a turn signal to switch lanes, the cruise pulsates. Marc Z. I would check the O-rings first (included with the > better filters) before spending that kind of money. Dennis, my mechanic, attempted to use the o-rings that came with the Mann fuel filter, but they were the wrong size. The dealer wants $156 for the part!!!!!!! The parts guy at the dealer was so amazed at the cost, he checked with his boss to see if the price was right. Dennis made a few calls and told me his independents were having to buy it from the dealer at the same price! Dennis suggested that we could swap that valve for the regular bolt used on the older engines, but that would negate the "kill" function. He said he could rig up at connection that would require something like the MityVac to kill the engine, but the time it would take to put into use would probably take too long.... I took a good look at the valve while the parts guy was trying to verify the price and it's a simple and basic design. It looks like the o-rings are the culprit. I'm tempted to get the proper rings, swap them, and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, I'll bite the bullet and spend the bucks. Another week of fuel leaking is worth the $150 savings.... Food for thought... I have only had the need for a kill switch once when my 240D was rear ended. The vacuum lines had been torn apart and that was the only easy way to shut it down. My old VW's didn't have a kill switch, but the fuel shutoff was a solenoid. I never had the need to rapidly shut the engine down. Should I take the chance and do away with this feature or cough up the bucks and fix it correctly? I'm on the fence and can't reach the popcorn.... I miss my 240D...
