The fault causes the lights that are supposed to be dark to be "back-fed", causing them to illuminate at the wrong time. I have an '84 300D that developed a wiring fault in the wire bundle that passes from the chassis into the RR passenger door. The symptom was that some of the dash/switch lights would come on when they were not supposed to. I could get the lights to turn on and off by opening and closing the door! I thought the car was in need of exorcism until I figured it out. I fixed the problem by running some new wire in the bundle. An accurate wiring diagram, good deductive reasoning and patience are necessary to fix this kind of problem. I might be able to help if you want to pursue further.
