Don't blame the guy. He has $925 into it, and would like that back out of it. But the question I ask to you is.....is it worth that? Especially since it will cost me about $100 just to get it here; it's 300 miles away. After talking to him for some time, it seems that there really is not that much more to say than the article does....not aware of any severe rust, but he was going to check that more closely. He was also going to check the front suspension (tie rod ends, ball joints, etc.) and the glass. What is the longevity of these? The interior is worn and dirty, and the engine compartment looks crowded, but the fuel economy would make me interested in messing with it......for the right price. I need a consensus value here before I even ask more questions. Thanks for being the best list of diesel-heads in the world. Thanks! I had a '80 4-door in college. Loved that car. Sad to see one looking so tired. Too bad it is so far away, I'd grab it for a "super secret skunkworks" project I have - which requires a mechanically sound engine/drivetrain/chassis and a "who cares" interior. >What is the longevity of these? They are pretty long-lived, if cared for. This one looks a little beathen though. >The interior is worn and dirty, and >the engine compartment looks crowded, Most of that is the A/C unit between the rad and engine. Without it the engine bay would be rather sparse looking. The VW A/C units were pretty anemic back then. I never used mine. >but the fuel economy would make >me interested in messing with it......for the right price. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for that one. - -- - --chuck goolsbee 02 Jetta TDi & 06 Liberty CRD arlington, wa, usa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2006 14:54:42 -0800 From: Kevin Subject: Re: [db] [OT] Wascally Wabbit On Wed, Dec 27, 2006 at 02:50:15PM -0800, chuck goolsbee wrote: > Too bad it is so far away, I'd grab it for a "super secret > skunkworks" project I have - which requires a mechanically sound > engine/drivetrain/chassis and a "who cares" interior. Okay, you and John need to stop hanging out together. Then again, maybe I need to stop talking to him too. See, I have this XJ with an oil pressure problem and a 300D that took out a deer... ;) K ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2006 16:47:29 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] [OT] Wascally Wabbit oh man... an xj and a smashed benz, way cool... making me respod from vegas on a treo... :) john On Wed, 27 Dec 2006, Kevin wrote: >-->On Wed, Dec 27, 2006 at 02:50:15PM -0800, chuck goolsbee wrote: >-->> Too bad it is so far away, I'd grab it for a "super secret >-->> skunkworks" project I have - which requires a mechanically sound >-->> engine/drivetrain/chassis and a "who cares" interior. >--> >-->Okay, you and John need to stop hanging out together. >--> >-->Then again, maybe I need to stop talking to him too. It's pretty ragged out. But, if you could find one in good shape, they are something else. I cut my diesel teeth on an '81 Rabbit LS. Over 10 years, and 250,000 miles, it was a ball to own. It had absolutely no power. The 4 speed transmission is a tall ratio one designed to get high mileage. After 50K it got 50 mpg plus for the next 50k. I drove it for almost a year with a blown head gasket and still got 44 mpg. It never really let me down in all the years that I owned it. In fact, after sitting for 2 years, it was my son's first car. He wasn't especially fond of it, since all his friends were driving Camaros and pickups, but really appreciated it on Saturday nights when they'd pass the hat and get enough pocket change to drive it around all night when his buddies couldn't afford to get their classier rigs out of the driveway... Finding a clean one, though, is going to be tough. They were inexpensive. My '81 was $10k out the door. An '81 240D was $16k or so. Most VW owners balked at spending $400 to change the cam belt. The same MB owners though nothing of double that for the timing chain. The end result was that an MB 10 or 15 years down the road was in far better shape that the equivalent VW. Had the VW owners maintained their cars like their MB counterparts, you'd find good examples. That didn't happen. If you want an old diesel, MB is about the only way to go. Oh me oh my! I want it so bad! The car I really wanted to begin with! It's a 1985 300D, 177k miles, euro vintage, body looks perfect, (will inspect in detail later) purportedly NO RUST WHATSOEVER, turbo, great mechanical condition, great interior, recently painted, sunroof, and new radio! He wants $4700 for it (less than NADA "Low retail") and I'm thinking that I should seriously investigate this thing! Remarks? (I still might offer the other guy $400 for the rabbit, but I doubt he'll take it. I think he'll just keep it.)
