I think kbb does a disservice when they provide a "trade-in", retail and private party value... the private party and retail value should be the same. You're more likely to get a good deal with a more reliable vehicle from a private party than you will a dealer. Dealers tell you nothing, usually throw away the extra keys, floor mats and owners manuals... leaving you with a bare car and no info... of course CARFUD is a useless waste of money that works in the favor of the dealers, as does some states that EXEMPT dealers from emissions on used cars!!!! So, there are two reasons why one might want to go to a dealer in washington state: 1) no emissions on the "new" purchase, and 2) sales tax is reduced by your trade in. Of course if you're paying 30% or more for your "new" used car you'd still be better off on your own. john On Sun, 31 Dec 2006, Jon Filina wrote: > -->John wrote: > --> > -->> >if they made a Jeep with a Diesel that I could afford, wasn't heavily > -->> >influenced > -->> >by Rube Goldberg and/or the Dodge Brothers, I might even sell off this > -->> >fleet > -->> >and get just one rig... never had a new car... not sure I ever will, > -->> >the > -->> >thought of spending $40k on a set of wheels seems really stupid to me. > --> > -->New? I've had this happen with Jeeps too... backing up one time I heard this funny sloshing around sound... pulled the rear quarter panel cover and there was water all the way up to the back floor... a good six inches worth... same kind of deal, the drain rubber got hard and would clog up... > -->> phil smart would be a good place to start your questioning on > -->> prices and such... either location... if you say you're a > -->> customer of meister distribution and service and pay the > -->> sales tax you'll find the prices much easier to deal with. > --> > -->Thanks for the tip. Aurora Autowrecking, Benz Friends, and Jim Startup are other options... not sure about benz friends, haven't dealt with them for a few years now, maybe other listers will have up to date intel. as far as phil smart you're going to pay over $100/hr labor... for any car... but they will have better info on the cars... the service manager at phil smart might be able to give you some good advice on what might be needed, you might consider having them do an inspection to correctly identify what is needed, and then take it to an independent for the work... I'd even ask the parts guys if they know any independents that are decent... I may be needing an alternator or an idler pulley, but I'll be dealing with the store in Lynnwood, but I'll ask if I make my way over there... might be months though, in grad school... classes start next week again... teaching a Bible Summary class on Sundays and of course have two jeep projects nearing completion... and my son is coming home from the air force on leave in a couple of weeks and is going to help me rebuild the carport... in other words, unless the belt flies off the Benz or the alternator self destructs I may not touch it until that event happens. ;) My '91 Grand Wagoneer should be arriving in the next week or so, so I'll have wheels... thirsty, but wheels... john > --> > -->Susan > --> ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://freegift.com **** http://wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2343 **********************************
