Susan, go ahead and replace your fuses, but I don't think that will be a permanent fix. A rebuilt unit, NOT used, should though. Your comment about water raises a question of a leaking windshield gasket which would be the most likely way water would make it under the dash and to the blower motor. You'll have to look into that a bit more. Jan, glad to see you here on the wacky diesel-benz list. I was testing the beta version of my "wayback machine" in an effort to restore the hair on top of my bald head. In order to do that, though, I should have set the year to 1966.... ;-( In June of that year, the Marine Corps shaved my head and it never all came back.... If I ever get all the bugs out of the program, I'll offer it to Big John. He MAY have had hair on his head at one time.... ;-) Actually, when I got home last night and booted this system I got an error message claiming there was no hard drive. This rebuilt Gateway will be two years old in March and I've never had a need to open the case other than to enable an external hard drive when I've installed different versions of Linux. Anyway, I restarted the machine and it booted ok. After I finished my email run, and the message you saw, I noticed that the time was wrong. Further inspection showed the old date. I have since corrected that. I guess I'm going to have to get into the case, clean out the dust bunnies I expect to find, and clean the connections to the hard drive and CD's. Oh well, it'll give me something to do and keep me off the streets which are fixin' to become quite icy here in the D/FW area. By the way, I've set Mozilla to view my messages by thread, instead of by date, which is the default. I makes it easier read. Yo, John! Ya want a copy of my "wayback machine"? Probably not, you'd most likely use it to revisit the Jeeps you had way back when... It's always great when the problem is simple, and most of the time it is... would be a good time to replace all of your fuses... they're inexpensive but can cause a lot of woes. you should also keep an eye on this... if the fan is failing it could have popped the fuse... let's hope it was just the normal process of aging. stay warm... it was 17 degree in Seattle this morning... dang, if it gets any colder I'm gonna have to zip up my jacket. :) (originally from the Chicago area, even though it's been 30 years since I left, I'm still ok with "cold". :) john On Sun, 14 Jan 2007, Susan Bernick wrote: > -->me: > --> > -->> So, the fan for the [83 300D turbo] heater died -- > --> > -->it *was* simply a fuse!!! . The erratic shifting that was occasional has become permanent and is getting worse. So I figure I better address the situation while the car still moves under it's own power. I like the car and it is in pretty good shape. Body is excellent, paint still looks good, and the interior is still clean. The engine speaks for itself. It has been my daily driver for a number of years and generally has been a low maintenance member of the fleet, so I can't complain. But the question now is what the next step should be. I see it as follows: 1 - Install a reman transmission - I have found a couple of places on-line that sell this particular transmission for about 1600 including the torque converter. Core is not included in that price. Not too bad, probably a day or two labor to make the swap and I am back to where I started. If I go this route, I will also take care of a few other things that the car needs - upper strut bearings, drive shaft bearing, replace the electric cooling fans, and maybe install the euro headlights. Car should then be good for another 50K. 2 - Sell it as it is - probably won't get much, but the right person may make it worth my while to be done with it ;-) 3 - Drop it off at the dealer and tell them to put in a new transmission - JUST KIDDING! Anyone have any thoughts? I am leaning toward #1. Even if I were to sell it in a year or so, it is worth a lot more with a good trans, so it's probably a good move. Has anyone had any experience with trans rebuilders in the North-East? I am in RI. I'd have a qualified mechanic or trans shop take a look at it first... knowing what little I do of the car I can't imagine it's gone... mine has 240k on it and it's doing fine, and I'm probably a more aggressive driver, maybe, than you. :) I've got an idea... finish your Dodge project and tow it out here, and I'll use the engine in a Jeep... :) ok, so you don't like that idea... ;) I'll get over it. I'd check with the Benz dealer to get a quote... just for grins... hope you can find a tranny shop that is honest and knows these things, that 1600 seems kinda high to me... john On Sun, 14 Jan 2007, FreddyP wrote: >-->Hi Gang - >--> >-->At just shy of 230,000 miles, the '91 300D's original transmission finally >-->decided that it had done enough.
