And yes, I looked long and hard at that ramcharger Fred... http://wagoneers.com/tmp/dodge-heaven/ALL.html it's a screamin' deal at $8K Fred... I'm sure someone on the list would love to have a totally rust free, slant-6, three on the tree full time 4x4 ramcharger with a removeable top and what, 15,000 original miles??? getting it home from Rhode Island would be an adventure... ;) it was tempting to consider the 4bt setup... but I'll resist the temptation all the same thank you. ;) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2007 02:13:51 -0600 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: [db] OT - dual-booted laptops? Just about the same performance, but the diesel is far more efficient. Try running a W124 gasser without an alternator and see how far you go. Once started, and never shut down, the diesel will run coast to coast while the gasser would die before the first fill up... Then, again, I'm preaching to the choir... ;-) Sorry, the only "data" I can give you is purely subjective. The keyboards are pathetic and the Rube Goldberg rodent workaround would make a saint take up the bottle.... The new monitors are pretty nice, though. Plugging in a pen mouse, if you could find one, would fix that problem. But, the keyboard... I'd have to connect my Northgate Omnikey 102 to it to be happy. I bought it in '88, around $150, and am still using it. The keys are like those on the old IBM Selectric typewriters and the thing is heavy, around 5.5 lbs. If I were hit you on the back of your head with the current crop of keyboards, you'd say "what the..." and punch my lights out. With this Northgate, I'd be visiting you in the hospital.... Besides, if I had a laptop I'd never get off the system. Being stuck on a desktop has it's advantages.... I can still pretend to have some semblance of a life... Linux taxes a laptop's battery far less than Winders, and that's the story I'm sticking with! IBM was the only one that had an even half decent layout, and now that Lenove does the ThinkPads, they appear to be going to the more common (read "cheaper") layout. Even with all the real estate those big screens give them, nobody gets the layout right, never mind the key feel. And a Northgate Omnikey. Mmmmm. Now that's a real man's keyboard. Might even call it the 116 or 123 of keyboards. (MLC) ;-) They used to even make one with both side column and top row function keys. Northgate no longer sells those keyboards, but a company called Creative Vision Technologies is making a clone. As I understand it, when Northgate quit making the Omnikeys, CVT contracted the original designers to design the clone they wanted to sell. From what I can tell, the CVT keyboards are virtually identical. The only difference I could tell was in the weight. The Stellar is 5 lbs. and my 102 is 5.5 lbs. That's still hefty though. Take a gander at: > http://cvtinc.com/products/keyboards/menu.htm They make two different versions. The Stellar has function keys on the left (like my 102) and across the top. The Prime has them only across the top. The prices are $189 for the Stellar and $149 for the Prime. Since I like my functions keys on the left, like the old XT's, the Stellar would be my choice. I am seriously considering getting one and keeping my 102 as a backup. Yes, you may question my sanity.... But a boy and his keyboard are inseparable... ;-) Jon ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2373 **********************************
