Demonstrators upset with Bush's visit here worry that the president and his biofuels buddy, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, really have visions of an OPEC-like cartel on ethanol. While Bush's nemesis in Latin America, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, is using his vast oil wealth to court allies in the region, Bush is sealing the deal Friday on an ethanol agreement with Brazil where nearly eight in 10 new cars run on fuel made from sugar cane. Call it ethanol diplomacy. Brazil is the first stop on Bush's eighth trip to Latin America, which also includes visits to Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico. On his 45-minute ride from the airport to his hotel on Thursday night, Bush's motorcade sped by a dozen or so gas stations where drivers in this traffic-clogged city can pump either gasoline or ethanol. Bystanders gawked at Bush's limousine, but only a few people waved. Anti-American sentiment runs high in Brazil, especially over the war in Iraq. Bush missed the demonstrations earlier in the day protesting his visit. Riot police fired tear gas and beat some protesters with batons after more than 6,000 people held a largely peaceful march through the financial district of Sao Paulo. About 4,000 agents, including Brazilian troops and FBI and U.S. Secret Service officers, are working to secure Bush's stay in the city that lasts about 24 hours. Undeterred by protests, Bush says he's on a goodwill tour to talk about making sure the benefits of democracy - in the form of better housing, health care and education - are available to all Latin Americans, not just the wealthy. He's visiting a community center in a neighborhood where the ultra rich live in close proximity to the desperately poor. U.S. companies have donated equipment to the center where Bush plans to highlight programs to give poor and disadvantaged youth a way forward in life. In Latin America, however, Bush's trip is widely viewed as a way for the president to counter the influence of Chavez, the populist ally of Cuba's Fidel Castro, who has led a leftward political shift in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and Nicaragua. To taunt Bush, the Venezuelan leader will speak at an "anti-imperialist" rally in a soccer stadium on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, about 40 miles across the Plate River from Montevideo, where Bush will meet Uruguay's president, Tabor Vazquez. While in Sao Paulo, Bush also will visit a fuel depot, operated by a subsidiary of the state-owned Petrobras, where about 100 trucks come and go daily. Some protesters, carrying stalks of sugar cane, protested the ethanol agreement, which is being formally signed by officials with the State Department and the Brazilian foreign ministry. The demonstrators warned that increased ethanol production could lead to social unrest because most operations are run by wealthy families or corporations that reap the profits, while the poor are left to cut the cane with machetes. "Bush and his pals are trying to control the production of ethanol in Brazil, and that has to be stopped," said Suzanne Pereira dos Santos of Brazil's Landless Workers Movement. The White House dismisses talk that the ethanol agreement between Bush and Silva is aimed at setting up an "OPEC of Ethanol" cartel led by Washington and Brasilia. Bush says he wants to work with Brazil, a pioneer in ethanol production for decades, to push the development of alternative fuels in Central America and the Caribbean. He and Silva also want to see standards set in the growing industry to help turn ethanol into an internationally traded commodity. "It's not about production-sharing, it's about encouraging development and encourage the Caribbean and Central American countries to get into the game," Bush's national security adviser, Stephen Hadley, said. In January, Bush called on Congress to require the annual use of 35 billion gallons of ethanol and other alternative fuels such as bio-diesel by 2017, a fivefold increase over current requirements. To help meet the goal, the president also is pushing research into making ethanol from material such as wood chips and switchgrass. One roadblock in the Bush-Silva ethanol talks is a 54-cent tariff the United States has imposed on every gallon of ethanol imported from Brazil. Bush says it's not up for discussion. The administration says the tariff, which makes sugarcane ethanol more expensive in America, is needed to subsidize U.S. corn growers ramping up production of ethanol in the United States. Silva, who has been invited to the Camp David presidential retreat on March 31, says he'll complain to Bush about the tariff, which he likens to other agricultural trade barriers the United States and Europe have in place. Also on the agenda were efforts to salvage the World Trade Organization talks - the so-called Doha round - that collapsed in discord last summer over farm subsidies and other disputes. - --- By DEB RIECHMANN Associated Press Writer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Mar 2007 20:28:20 -0500 From: Marc Z Subject: Re: [db] OOOOOH! Life would be simple... (but for how long asks the crowd as they munch on the popcorn...) But then I realize that my J10 has fallen into a very deep black hole 100 miles south of here... calls aren't returned, emails are answered days later, if at all, it's like a slow motion delayed connection... a time warp... and SuperDawg been six years in many, many pieces... but I am still amazed at how quickly he came apart, not even two weeks and it was completely and utterly dismantled and carefully sorted into piles... then moved around and stored for a long time... :) slowly it's been getting some attention, the frame has been detailed and painted, the bed had been lined top and bottom... the cab has been bedlined under and inside... but the progress has been painfully slow... painfully... So I'm wondering, hey, I've got a nice FSJ here... why shouldn't I just fix up Omega and go that route... I've got it here. I can see it. I can touch it. Thinking, go for it, keep the J10 trailer, and just go gonzo on the '91 GW... makes more sense, except for my fear of that stupid tailgate window... would be nice if we could make barn doors for that thing... :) Anyway, it's here, it's mostly in one piece (still haven't sorted out whether the alarm or the starter relay is the villian. ;). Omega needs a few things... mainly to run and drive smooth... and I need the time to fix him... or I could hire out the work... then sell off the rest of the fleet... the 4 door sunroof equipped Grand Wagoneer with a Diesel doesn't sound too bad... If I put a Diesel in Omega with the dual tank setup I could part with shadowfax... so really my dilema is, popcorn ready?... * ** ** * * should I invest the effort into the 1991 Grand Wagoneer (aka Omega), finish the bodywork/paint, put in WJ seats, a nice Diesel driveline, decent tires and call it good... OR should I continue to wait until very warm places freeze over and I see SuperDawg again (remember, that '83 J10 stepside that was dismantled in April 2001)? * ** ** * * the J10 stepside is without a doubt the cooler looking of the two vehicles... but the '91 GW is more practical and has a nice factory sunroof and four doors... more leg room, so I can install reclining seats, even carry the same load... only problem is I haven't really warmed up to Omega... the few issues bug me... I miss SuperDawg... Just wish he was in one piece and up here, I would have had this swap done in six months if I had done it myself... now it's six years and very little hope of seeing it completed any time soon. ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2007 17:49:45 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] OOOOOH! I'm thinking of going forward with the Grand Wagoneer and giving up on SuperDawg... Well, not really giving up, but facing the cold hard reality of having lost it to a procrastinator with good intentions. So, to recover, I'll just use the driveline out of the '91 GW and put in the J10. The 360 V8 would be fun in the stepside and enhance it's resale value greatly. It's becoming quite clear that curtis doesn't really give a flying rip if he ever finishes my truck and has plenty of excuses and "life experiences". Six flippin' years is totally ludicrous. Just want my truck reassembled, maybe even with the original bad 4.2l/t-5 and np208 so I can deal with it... amazing how it could come apart in less than two weeks, but even six years later it's not together or even close... The best I can hope for is that curtis will put the J10 back together, maybe even paint it all one color and then I can haul it home and finish it myself. It's really irritating that even if I drive the 200+ miles to retrieve it, I wouldn't be able to gather up all the pieces in one trip. I just don't have the time and basically my truck is being held hostage by a world class procrastinator. >From a practical standpoint the GW makes more sense anyway. Too bad this '91 has so many little annoyances... it would be easier if it was smooth and 100%. But then again, are any FSJs ever really 100%? :) All it'll take is time and money. I hate the tailgate setup, but there is some hope of panel doors... Thinking about it I may retrieve my '67 J100 panel and have the doors replicated. The original deal was that curtis was going to buy it for a bargain after helping with the swap, but there are six years worth of broken promises. I don't care to keep the panel, just want to have the doors reproduced then I'd sell it or work something out with curtis so he could have it back, since I know his wife loves that thing. All I want are the same kind of doors on my '91 GW. All I really want is one nice Diesel 4x4 that isn't the size of a small freight train. The extended cab Diesel trucks are all massive. The smaller Diesels are too small, or too expensive. The J10 idea is sort of ok, but the cab is too small... So, if I reassemble the J10, maybe with a V8, and clean up the panel, replicate the doors... then I could sell both of them and the 300D and cover the costs of making the '91 GW a nice Diesel powered daily driver/interstate cruiser... All I know is I'm frustrated, p'od and want to get things squared away. Just went out and looked at the GW, it doesn't need much, but it does have needs... and I have no time... Well, enough of this, homework now... john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2007 14:32:44 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] thinking XJ, pass the popcorn popcorn ready? :) Between experimental battery life data gathering and homework, I'm thinking about the fleet... :) Tired of driving a car and/or junk. Tired of waiting to have time or get help to create my own dream vehicle... So, I'm thinking about getting a 2000 XJ classic, found a really, really nice looking silverish one for about $6300. Hopefully it's still available... :) Only thing is it has cloth seats, 131K on the odo. I've also found a 2001 XJ limited, front end damage, probably about $3k worth of repairs... but leather heated seats... also a negative is it's black. Don't like dark colors, shows dirt and scratches.
