Does anybody know of a good diesel Benz mechanic in the northern Virginia area, specifically Fairfax county? I've resolved the electrical issues and gotten the '81 300D inspected and back on the road, but after putting on 50 miles or so, I can tell that she needs professional attention. There appears to be a valve cover gasket leak, or something worse. The upper engine is getting bathed in shiny oil. Also, the shocks seem iffy to me; the rear end of the car sits lower than I remember on level ground, and the body roll is reminiscent of an ancient, poorly-maintained Volvo a friend of mine used to have. My SWMBO is used to a '92 Mercury Grand Marquis. It's a boat. She likes boats. (Frankly, I do too.....it's just not practical for me to have a boat.....besides, I like the tighter handling of the 123.) She likes the lines of the 116 body. I do too. But the early 126's aren't bad either. So the question is: I'm the one that has to keep this thing running, no matter how much she likes it. I have never owned either of the large-body sedans, and would like very much to know which is easier (and less expensive) to keep running. I like to think that the 116's would be easier and cheaper due to less electronified stuff, but maybe I'm wrong. Set me straight......pass the popcorn....and hope I don't get in too much trouble for even considering getting SWMBO a car that's older (if much nicer) than mine! Heh. For what it's worth, that 92 grand marquis is one of the easier vehicles to keep on the road and happy, provided you keep the coolant serviced and it hasn't started to burn enough oil that it clogs the EGR passages. 116 will have a turbo. The marquis should roast it from a stoplight, and have enough time to come back, eat it for lunch, then come back again for seconds before the race is over. If power matters to your wife, stop now. The 116 will also not have a floaty feel to it, they're actually surprisingly solid. Watch for rust, they rust out BAD. You mention vacuum as a problem, if the climate control doesn't work (and nothing happening except hot air coming out the defrost vents when you hit defrost is still broken), move your wallet to your front pocket and run. REBUILT the servos cost roughly $600 or so. And you're not finding one in a junkyard that is worth messing with. I was happy to find one that still had the failure mode of hot defrost intact :-/ K On Mon, Mar 12, 2007 at 08:42:41PM +0000, jasonbassett-at-juno.com wrote: > ebay id 110102154064 > > A 116 body 300D.....and in nice shape, needing (apparently) only > vacuum work and a windshield.
