My '93 300D (2.5) has been having a growing problem with its locks. When I turn off the engine, the door locks are extremely hard to pull up, and even when I pull them up, neither of the front doors triggers the central unlocking. In addition, as soon as I let go, the knob snips back down into the locked position. Clearly a strong vacuum is being developed when the engine is off. If I unlock before turning off the engine, everything is fine. After I turn off the engine, I hear a motor of some kind running for a minute or two behind the back seat. Once that stops, the door locks "bounce" and then I can open them normally. Any suggestions? Oh, and while I've got your attention, is there any special trick to get a new wiper pack installed? The arm doesn't seem to angle back enough to put the new one on without insane amounts of flexing... I don't normally drive with the doors locked. If I should happen to lock the doors when I get out, I have to wait for the vacuum pump (in the trunk) to finish it's cycle before I can unlock them again. Beginning with the S-Class, W126's, MB put the door locks on a separate vacuum circuit. The W123's and W115's don't have the separate pump. So, unlock the doors before you shut down the engine. Is the neighborhood you are driving through so rough that you feel the need to lock the doors??? Or is Big John following you.... ;-) >Oh, and while I've got your attention, is there any >special trick to get a new wiper pack installed? >The arm doesn't seem to angle back enough to put the >new one on without insane amounts of flexing... > Can't help you there. I had a similar issue in our W201, managed to fix it by plugging the leak in the line to the fuel door lock and greasing the lock mechanism itself (hidden in behind wheel well liner in the boot("trunk"). No more pump noise and locks pop on demand. Steve On 5/24/07, Jon Filina wrote: > Bruce wondered: > > >My '93 300D (2.5) has been having a growing problem > >with its locks. It has only been in the past few months that it started being a problem. (Driver's door lock is bent, was semi-repaired a little over a year ago. "semi" because replacing the part would have been horrendously expensive for whatever reason) > So, unlock the doors before you shut down the engine. Is the > neighborhood you are driving through so rough that you feel the need to > lock the doors??? Or is Big John following you.... ;-) I grew up just outside of New York City. In the 1970's. (i.e. recession, carjackings, very high crime, cinder blocks tossed off of overpasses, etc. Nice now, very dangerous then) And I had to drive through Newark, NJ on my way to and from college. Oh, yeah, and there's always when I lived near East Palo Alto, CA (highest murder rate per capita in the country at the time -- even higher than DC). So, yeah, locking doors is kind of a habit. :) Also, locking the doors helps keep them closed when your car is spinning and rolling after being broadsided at high speed (or sideswipes and such on a highway). Keeping the doors closed helps keep your arms and legs (and maybe head) from being outside the car's frame when additional objects make contact or pass too close by...
