Have heard of cylinders cracking on these.. but it seems to be few and far between (what would the symptoms be if I wanted to check an engine for this condition?). Probably looking at something with 150k miles on it due to the age so anything else in particular to look out for? Electrics? Brakes? Rust? Ball joints or bearings? Shocks? All of the above? ;-) Cheers Steve On 5/28/07, john wrote: > > the '96 would have the older body style... not > sure but there may be more legroom... > the '97 in the states was the newer body style, steel rear > hatch, updated dash, lots of plastic... older dash was plastic, > but seemed more open... > > either year is fine... the Diesel engine used is the Italian > VM 2.8L Diesel, correct? If you're really brave, you can get what the pros use - a NON-orbital polisher that looks rather like an angle grinder and takes velcro'd polishing heads -total cost around $200. Makita makes a nice one. Or you can polish by hand, but you'll need to use more agressive polishes. Then you get some abrasive polishing compound. No wax, please. Get two grits. Turtle wax makes a coarse one ( brown ) and a finer one ( white ) for hand use. The machine stuff can be gotten at your car paint store. After the paint has been completely buffed, you may wish to clay it. A bar of special clay will take off every last tit sticking up above the paint surface, making it completely smooth. After a good rinse, you're ready to wax. I recommend Zaino wax. There's two kinds - Z5 for the first coats and scratch filling, and Z2 for the final coat. A complete Zaino kit will cost you $90 or so. Apply per directions. Depending on the depth of your scratches, it may take you 6 to 10 coats to make them go away. As you said, a multi-day process. - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 May 2007 12:49:40 -0500 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] possible sale of 190D for Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD Remember that diesels have only recently been reintroduced in Jeeps in the US, so we don't know too much about that engine. I'm not even sure if you folks got the same VM Motori diesel that they used in the US. For all I know, that could be a real Benz TD in there. John can speak to the general reliability of the rest of the vehicle, but I think what you get was assembled by Magna-Puch somewhere on that side of the pond, so assembly quality may differ from what they sell to us locals. Surprise, surprise, surprise. Another place for reference on finishes, if it's still active, is www.autopia.com, although when I visited there years ago it seemed to be populated by finish fanatics. The kind that wipe their finish down with a microfiber cloth every time they enter or leave their cars. Still, they had lots of experience with different, but current, products. All: My daughter just phoned in from Phoenix (Scottdale) and says there is a 300SD Turbo in the parking lot at her apartment complex, for sale with a $2000.00 asked sign in the window. I have asked her for a detailed condition report and pictures, just in case anyone is interested. I have no knowledge on this model, but it seems to me that it would have to be real clean, straight and with good interior to be worth this much? Any comments on the going values?
